Which Era of Rush Do You Like Best?

One of the things I like about Rush is that they are continuously reinventing their sound. The problem with Rush is that they are continuously reinventing their sound. There was the "Power Trio" Era, the Progressive Era, the Synth Era, and the latest, "Guitar oriented but not "Power Trio' or 'Prog' Era". I have loved Rush since the first time I heard the "A Farewell to Kings". They are one of my favorite bands in concert and almost all their albums are among my favorites. I have to admit that their synth years were pretty hit and miss with me (loved Signals and Grace Under Pressure, but Power Windows and Roll the Bones didn't do much for me). How about you, what eras did you like best/least. Was there any albums you just plain hated?

I guess it's all about how long you've been into Rush. I consider the "Moving Pictures" album to be their middle stuff, not their early. ;~D

Hello ParaTed2k, Ya' know, this is a tough one. I'd probably say that "All the World's a Stage" is probably still my favorite album. The early years were best remembered for "Working Man", "Fly by Night", "Rivendell" and especially "Trees", in my opinion. But, wow the 80s sound ushered in a real shift, that was fun, high energy, and less 'high', if you know what I mean. I loved "Red Barchetta", "Closer to the Heart", and "Spirit of the Radio". That more mainstream sound was a welcome shift from their loftier early days. I imagine it was fun for them too. I saw them so many times in concert through the 70s & 80s. It seemed like it was an annual concert. Always very entertaining. And, I still consider Peart the finest drummer, ever! However, I did kind of lose interest after "Signals". So, from "Grace under Pressure" on, I can really offer much. Thanks for reminding me that I'd really lost touch with them. I'll have to check out some of their newer work. Do you have a newer favorite?

All the World's a Stage is still one of my all time favorite live albums... of any band. Rush's live albums are all great! My favorite of the newer sound is Test for Echo... in fairness though, I haven't heard the latest one enough to be able to place it yet.

Yep, you're right. Rush accomplished something that has eluded many other bands through the years; their live albums were always better than their recorded versions. The must have had the best roadies ever to get the sound so amazingly right. I'll check out your suggestion from their more recent work. I actually feel kind of bad acknowledging that I blew them off after "Signals". Shame on me!

Great discussion. I first found out about Rush at the age of 16. They played on the Canadian Music award show called The JUNOS. The song was the title tract to A Farewell to Kings. I was blown away and became almost a lifelong fan. I say almost because I kinda lost interest after the release of Hold your fire, which turned out to be the last album of theirs I purchased until the Live DVD of RUSH in Rio. Awesome. I love live music. I'm now 45 and unfortunately, to date I've only witnessed the live show once. That was the Hemishere's tour. And Rush has not returned to my town since and there are a ton of people who are really PO'd about that fact. To answer your question, I guess my favorite era would be from Caress of Steel to Hold your Fire. I have kept track of their career and heard their radio played songs from the albums since Hold your Fire, but my least favorite Rush songs where always the ones that got the most radio play. Final note: at the tender age of 18, I got a Rush tatoo on my arm. Although it's almost faded away, I'm glad the band did not.

Yes it's amazing to me to be in my 40's and still love Rock music. I had a fear that I would grow old and start listening to music I disliked as a teenager. If you get a chance to see them this time out, I hope it's an enjoyable experience.

Man, me and you almost lived the same life (as far as Rush goes)... I heard about Rush around 16. The first album I heard was A Farewell to Kings. I fell away from Rush for awhile during Late 80s, early 90s. The only time I've seen Rush live was on the Hemispheres Tour. I'm in my mid 40s. I have no Rush tatoo though. ;~D

Yeah, people told me I'd lose my taste for harder rock as I got older. I admit, I do like the mellower stuff now, but I still like to rock!

I've liked Rush for a little while now, but until very recently, I hadn't heard any of their stuff except for a mix CD of their older material that a friend gave me. Now I have a few of their albums though, and I'm pretty sure my favorite was the prog era (that would be songs like 2112 and Cygnus X-1, right?). I like some of their synth stuff too (gotta love Tom Sawyer), but nothing can compare to their older proggy stuff (for me, anyway). I do like their newest album alright, but it's not something I'll listen to all that often. Whenever I am in a mood to listen to Rush, it'll most likely be either 2112, Farewell to Kings, or Hemispheres.

I've noticed that about Test for Echo and Vapor Trails too. I really like both of them, but I don't listen to them as often as I do the older stuff. I think I listen to their live CDs and DVDs more than anything now.

I like all Rush music. I think my least favorite song is New World Man. I really enjoyed Getty Lee's solo album. I am impressed with the fact that they are able to change their sound. I am glad they are still around.

I really like their earliest stuff - Fly By Night, 2112, stuff like that... But their more mainstream 80's stuff was what first got me listening to Rush - Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Limelight. Great tunes. I bit later on I was able to appreciate some of their messages and I like the lyrics of "New World Man" much better than the sound. I'm impressed by their newest stuff tho' it's kind of unfamiliar to me and is taking some getting used to - probably due to the fact that I keep pluggin' in the FLY BY NIGHT tunes for a listen! Rush music is always interesting, that's for sure - even if there are some tunes that don't strike a unanimous chord with everyone. Haha - I particularly LOVE their videos - ALL OF THEM - even the totally cheesy ones that most people dislike. I like those ones for just that reason - they're cheesy, funny and I'm entertained, I guess...at least they took the risks to attempt new things - 'evolve' - and the band is constantly 'in development' - that's the best thing about Rush!

It's kind of strange, as big a Rush fan as I am, I've only seen a few of their videos. I guess I need to start checking them out!

I like a different era depending on my mood. Mostly the older power stuff, though. How many times have I heard Anthem and Bastille Day? Lakeside Park, now that's a tune right there.

Yup, those tunes never get old! Their music definitely has enough variety to cover almost every mood.

I'm of a mind that all Rush eras are great!!!! That's the great thing about it. What ever mood I am in I can pic an era and it fits. I just finished Anthem By Ayn Rand. Makes alot of the lyrics make sense. Listening to the song Anthem(which I do alot of lately.) All I can say is I am a die hard Rush fan.

If you just read Anthem by Ayn Rand, side one of 2112 will make a lot more sense to you. ;~D
