How do you handle customer order payments do you request payment in full?

A customer asked me to crochet two hats, and I was not sure if I should asked for payment in full or 50% down. What do you think is the best method to use?

Most people recommend getting at least 50% down, particularly if the item you are making is particularly unique, and would not appeal to another customer. If someone asks me to crochet them a hat that I know I could sell elsewhere, I usually don't require a down payment. This may also be because I am fairly trusting, and have never had someone fail to pay for a custom item.

I would get at least the 50% down. This way if they don't come threw with the rest of the money, you aren't out anything. It would be best to get full payment upfront so you have no worrys.

It depends on the product and the costumer. I am an aritst. For most of the work I am doing, I don't ask for anything. I do the art, then scan it to show them. If they are pleased, they send me full payment. It has worked for me for years this way. I have never gotten stuck. I don't even wait until the check clears to send out the merchandise. But, I only do this if it is under $75. Anything more, or if I get into mega bucks, then I do want 50% down, and will wait until the final payment clears before giving the art work out.

I have been burned before so I have been asking for payment up front. I had one friend that had me buy the materials and make something for her and then she decided she didn't want it. So I was stuck with it for a while. And then I was stupid again and told a customer that they could pay so much down and then make payments and they screwed me to. So my husband and I have decided that we get payment up front then we go and buy the materials if we have to or then I go ahead and make it. Hope that this helps.

I would get at least 50% down, that at least will cover your materials. If is an order you think you might not be able to sell elsewhere I would ask for full payment.
