Have you heard this story? It is actually very amazing and true. It is about a librarian in Iraq that feared her library was going to be attacked and all the books would be destroyed. So, at night she would move the books one by one in order to try and save them. When the library was finally bombed, she had moved thousands to safety totaling 70% of the library. There is a well written children's book about it as well as articles written. I was truly touched by the tale and wanted to share it.

People don't seem to appreciate the real damage done by cultural destruction. A culture loses part of itself, in that its own nature is damaged. Culture is the character of a society, and destroying culture is the ultimate crime of destroying its identity. This librarian must be a very brave, selfless, person, to take such risks for her culture. Fortunately, throughout history, people have preserved their cultures, sometimes in the most impossible circumstances, when the destruction was at its most irrational. Sometimes that's the only reason anyone knows there was a culture. I'm glad this is being taught to kids. They need to know about that.

Thank you for sharing this story. It touched me too. We hear so much about about the violence and senseless killing, so this is truly uplifting. It is so sad that we usually only hear negative news.

That is a nice story. We need to share more good stuff that is happening rather than broadcasting the bad. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Of course, it is worse that people get caught up in wars at all but I love books and do not like to think of them getting ruined in this way. It feels sacreligious to me. I am sorry for the people of Iraq that the war has lasted so long but am glad that this lady was able to save so much of the library. I hope the books are safe where they are now and that the librarian is too. I hope the war ends soon.
