i have stopped eating at sakae sushi. dunno why it's usually so crowded with such long queues as well. dun think the food is great.
a good measure of the quality of a jap rest is this. are there japanese eating inside? i thot ichiban boshi was good for a while. the quality is better than Sakae, but now i've found my new favourite!
It's called Waraku. there's one at starhub building, behind centrepoint. also branches near katong mall, east coast parkway and marina square. the food is very affordable (about ichiban prices) and very good quality. there are japanese there!
hon Jin near tanjong pagar is not bad too. but pricey. what's your fav, if you like jap food?

My wife loves salmon sashimi... and going to the restaurant is too expensive IMO. The favorite jap restaurant is rite in my own kitchen. Going to the market, for the same amount of money, we could get like 3 time the quantity of salmon if we had dine at the restaurant.
What we do to satisfy the craving? we go out to buy a tube/tub of wasabi, a bottle of good teriyaki sauce and fresh salmon from the market and we are set!
Washing the salmon clean and squeezing some lemon to add to the taste, we will sit down to a sumptuous feast of sashimi in the comfort of our own home, in front of the TV at a fraction of the cost!

i usually go to japanese eateries that caters more to japanese than locals
tried the starhub building waraku once but end up with food poisoning so that's off my list
the latest one i like is called 'sun & moon' at wheelock place
they have a branch at central mall but that one cmi
to me a japanese eatery must have certain dishes to make it authentic
any eatery that dun sell chatsuke (tea rice) is not authentic in my opinion
another one that is not bad is the one at hotel royal
the spinach salad is really nice :)
