Writers: Let's talk about the write what you know philosophy

a handmade daytimer - If I don't keep track of things consistently, I'll forget what I need to do next or what's coming up. It would be a horrible mess.

When you search for new writing opportunities, do you focus on topics that you already know about or do you look for opportunities based on how much they pay?I prefer writing what I know about for a regular, on-going situation. However, I love researching new topics because I love learning about new things.

I tend to write about what interests me. Sometimes I can get paid others times I don't. I like researching new topics mainly literature and art and sometimes philosophy. Research is a great way to learn about new things.

Writing about art is quickly becoming one of my favorite things to do. I would love to find a good paying job that would let me submit content of this nature all the time. But, alas, it'll remain a dream for awhile it seems. Thank you for responding!

I'm not a professional writer, but I write a little for online outlets such as Helium.com and AssociatedContent.com. For these I prefer to write articles on topics that I am familiar with -- or at least interested in -- but require research to complete. If I know nothing about the topic I worry about unwittingly revealing my ignorance, but if I'm just writing down facts that I already know I worry about boring my readers. The articles that give me the most personal satisfaction to write are those during which I learn something new but in which I feel I've added something that the reader may not have known or realized.

That's *exactly* how I've chosen to tackle the work I do on AssociatedContent.com, too! I also work in this manner for Epinions.com and Suite101.com because the writing seems to flow so naturally and so easily (and quicker, so I can accomplish more). Thank you for responding!

When i write articles for my magazine, i usually know the common themes they write about. And write about theese things what i am interested in. Usually i give them a lot of texts and they choose theese one what fit to the current number.

This is interesting - thank you for sharing your experiences. I don't have a regular magazine that I work for, so I'm gearing this more toward individuals in that situation. So, when I search out for new writing jobs, I tend to go for the jobs where they're asking for content I already have some experience with. When I'm looking for a challenge, I'll tackle topics that I have no information on so I can get deep into the research and learn something new.
