I have an electric ice cream maker with a gel core canister. I cheat. I use pudding mix, add an extra cup of milk and pour the whole mixture into my ice cream maker. 20-30 minutes later I have soft serve ice cream in whatever flavor pudding I used. It holds up better in Texas heat than regular ice cream and my son loves it. I have also made ice cream out of equal parts soda and whole milk. I just pour the stuff into my ice cream maker and presto soft serve ice cream flavored by my fave sodas. I use diet sodas too, but they are more icey than the ones with all the sugar. I also use ice cream mixes where all I add is milk. I have some great old fashioned ice cream recipes that I will have to go dig out but I will post a few on here for you in the next day or so.
BTW, when I do the pudding ice cream, I add stuff to it. Like cherries to vanillla pudding or marshmallows to chocolate pudding. If I use white chocolate pudding I like to add chocolate chips or mini m&ms. My son just loves it.
