I'm interested in hearing people's opinions on the life and legacy of the man. I must admit I have a love/hate relationship with him; mostly I don't like him. I find my feelings problematic because I believe that despite my hatred at most of his preachings, I believe he believed he was doing the right thing. In the 60's when he preached segregation and against interracial marraige, he was wrong, but he believed he was right. In the 80's when he called AIDs God's punishment for gays, he was wrong, but believed he was right. I probably won't respond to any responses, unless they tip my hat, but I am very, very curious to know where people stand on this man who was ever present and ever controversial. All thoughtful and inciteful responses get a plus from me

As much as I agree with the whole "HE believed he was right" that doesnt (for me) change the fact that he was a bitter, heartless, horrible hate spewing man....A rapist or murderer can BELIEVE with every ounce of their being that they were "right" but it doesnt make it any less of a crime nor does it make it any less horrific ya know.. I think Falwell was a disgrace to the Christian community and more so to his god and gods teachings really and I doubt very much that IF there is a heaven, he's in it..I cant see any higher power approving of that sort of vile cruel hatred towards other ppl... He certainly loved being controversial thats for damn sure BUT was he that way because of his faith and what he felt was devotion to that faith OR did this "man" (I use the term loosely) secretly lvoe the limelight and thats all it was about for him in his core? He was noted to say that if it wasnt for gay demonstrators already existing he'd "have to invent them"....This "man" bashed everything from MLK and the Civil Rights Movement to the flippin Telitubbies for crying out loud! that IMO REAKS of attention seeking (not in a positive way)..and of course then there was the 9/11 remarks which I peronally foudn absolutely atrocious...Lets face it, anyone in their right flipping mind wouldnt say nationally that 9/11 should be blamed on gays/pagans/feminists/Pro Choicers and Abortionists etc etc...for all the crap that flowed from his face THAT ONE was brutally evil and that actually brought my dispise for him to an all time high...

"But I fear the parents are also at fault. Rather than listening to an idiot who claimed to have God's ear, they should have listened to their kid." OH how I wish I could give you multiple +'s for that statement!!! Seriously! Kudos to you!!

I would agree, transdisc, but that isn't my say. He might get a chance to plead his case.

I didn't know much about him but then again I don't keep up with a lot of people. I was sheltered as a child and it wasn't until I got out on my own that I knew what reality was. But from what you had posted about him, I would probably say I wouldn't like him.

I don't like hom at all. He is very polarise and as you have mentioned he had been so wrong on many issues but believed he was right and critized people. But that was not all he had mixed religion and politic, somthing that our founding fathers wanted it to be separate and should be separate.
