Snails are homing!

When my Brother's children were small we spent hours rounding up all the snails in my garden and walking down the road to a piece of waste ground where we released the snails. This was a weekly ritual for several years. Then we were all sitting down watching a nature programme and the voice over said "and of course, snails are homing, up to about two miles, so it's no good just chucking them in your neighbour's garden, because they will be straight back the next day." Well, there was pandemonium. I don't think my family have laughed so much for years. They had visions of us all trooping back up the hill with hundreds of determined little snails hurrying up the hill behind us. I had the last laugh though because my brother had to take up further afield to rehome the snails. So, if you would rehome snails, you can't do it too close to home lol.

Ah bless them! I had no idea they were homing creatures, that explans why our pet ones in the garden don't run away. Roo loves snails and will gently harrass any he finds for days on end, feeding them grass and my plants. Carryng them around and talking to them it's really sweet. He "reads" them his fave stories too. The other week we walked home from playschool 1/2 mile, 3/4 hour, 2 snails on the way they did eventually escape his loving attentions as I will not allow them in the bungalow. I know they eat your plants but I never rehome them, they are little friends in the garden and teach our little ones to love and respect nature! I think it's lovely that you used to rehome snails with your brothers children, so uch nicer than throwing them over the fence!

Ah that really is sweet :-)However, not allowing them inside doesn't actually mean anything to snails. They will sneak in sometimes, I know! I have always rehomed them but my brother had hysterics over that programme, the hours I had spent traipsing down the road and back ferying snails!

We get the occasonal slug indoors, dunno how they appear but I've never seen a snail indoors, they have their own houses. Best laid plans of mice and men etc, at least the healthy exercise and respect for nature were a bonus even if the little cuties followed you home just to get another ride down the road in a bucket, hee-hee!

I don't know why but i find snails cute and slugs repulsive. One house where I lived had slugs as big as snakes and the things came out at night and it was absolutely horrible. The area under the kitchen sink was damp and that attracted them and the landlord didn't do repairs but was quite happy for you to pay if you wanted things put right, yes, it was in THOSE days. We do get snails in the communal hall, why I do not know, but I do find them cute and just pop them outside again. Yup, the thought of them following us back up the hill still makes the kids laugh.

Well, not having a garden doesn't stop them, they seem to get everywhere. Strange thing is I can not abide slugs, they make me feel sick, yet I think snails are cute. Here is a nice link to a site all about them, and don't go eeeeeeew, it is a nice site - hugs! http://www.geocities.com/sseagraves/allaboutsnails.htm
