Guiding Light’s Reva Chats With Brenda Waters (KDKA) PITTSBURGH Guiding Light is the longest running show in broadcast history, entertaining fans on radio and television for seven decades. KDKA’s Brenda Waters sat down with Kim Zimmer, the woman who plays one of the show’s leading characters, Reva Shayne. Zimmer created the character back in November 1983. She has four Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actress and six nominations. Sisters Reva and Cassie Layne go at it on Guiding Light and it’s all over character Josh Lewis – Reva’s husband. It seems when Reva thought she was dying, she encouraged the two to hook up, but the story line has taken a turn. “I didn’t die, is that my fault? I survived and I want my man back. But I don’t think I am going to succeed,” Zimmer said, speaking of her character. “I’m telling you I don’t think I am going to succeed, that’s it.” Zimmer can go into character in a snap and some story lines hit home, like when Reva survived breast cancer. “My sister is a survivor. My grandmother lost both breasts. I have a lot of friends who are survivors,” she said. “I thank God I haven’t and I was just like Reva. I don’t go for mammograms and I have a history of it in my family. I go for mammograms now since playing this story.” Zimmer and three other cast members were in Pittsburgh for a special project, all in celebration of the show’s 70th Anniversary. We couldn’t let them leave without showing them around town. First stop was Primanti Brothers in the Strip District. The next stop was Children’s Hospital in Oakland where they found some young fans. The real reason the cast members came to Pittsburgh was to raise the level of volunteerism by doing it themselves. While in town, the cast made a stop at Family Resources where they did a lot of work to help get the place ready for kids this summer.
