What's your favorite "street" food?

In my town there are street vendors everywhere selling a variety of "street" foods for the busy public to consume as they go about their daily affairs. Some of my favorite street foods come from the Chinese,Japanese and Korean vendors who often cook up fresh meals on the spot. My least favorite is those hot dog vendors who expect people to eat a hot dog that's been drowned and sitting in hot water for hours. Some people actually like these! So what's your favorite food-on-the-go? How often do you grab a snack from a street vendor? Any great ones where you live?

I'm leary of eating any type of street food. I'm worried about bacteria, and things like when was the last time the person washed their hands? Sometimes I do indulge at our arts festivals, but only after I observe the vendors and their handling of food. I love the Thai and Chinese booths. I will not eat a hot dog from a street vendor. Blech! What are your thoughts on the controversy at Geno's (I think that's the one)Philly cheese steak stand? Maybe it's not him, but the one who has a sign posted that one must order in English. How often do you indulge in Philly Cheese Steaks? Also, how often do you eat scrapple? I'm originally from PA Dutch country. I had to ask...

I like cheesesteaks but it's a rare treat for me... I also think that Geno's is overrated, and the owner pulled that "English Only" ploy as a publicity gag... I like scrapple,(Who actually cares what's in it!) with a dollop of real butter and maple syrup, like it's normal fat content isn't nearly enough! :) The best cheesesteaks for me will always be Jim's at 4th and south! :) http://www3.villanova.edu/philly/food.htm

When I was little, my dad used to get scrapple from a local farmer. He'd slice it up, fry it on a cast-iron griddle. He served it with syrup, but it was a dark one he called "molasses." I think it was Turkey brand. I remember a turkey on the label. I hated scrapple. Too gritty. And that was before I ever knew what was in scrapple. I did like the peanutbutter and molasses bread we'd have for dessert. Thanks for the link to the Philly eateries. If I ever get there, I'll have to an eating tour of Philly. It's not Tuscany, but it's closer.

I bought a book yesterday called Country Scrapple. Everything you ever wanted to know about scrapple and more. It also has a junk load of scrapple recipes. Though I don't like eating it, I had to have the book as an addition to my culinary history section of my personal library.

We don't have street vendors in our smll time only during the fairs. My favorites are the french fries and corn dogs, and even a fried twinkie, it's delicious..

there are a lot of street foods in the philippines that are really good! i like fisballs, kikiam and squid balls, with their sweet our spicy sauce. there's also a new one called calamares, but it's actually a big squid that are cut into pieces, and they are breaded, fried, and are eaten with vinegar. but my favorite street food in the philippines is ISAW! it's actually chicken intestines that are cleaned, seasoned and are grilled in barbeque sticks. it sounds gross but it tastes really good!

My favorite street food has got to be those giant corn dogs with a little mustard. My next favorite is elephant ears! (Gosh, with all these food threads I found today, I'm going to have to go and raid the refrigerator, lol!)

Love both of those! How well does "street" pizza stack up to the pizzaria kind?

You know, I don't have that much experience with street food vendors. I would have to say that I actually love all kinds of foods. But sadly, they do not love me. Since discovering that I am borderline diabetic and not allowed to have many foods that I love without medication, I have had to reduce my carb intake and it has limited me to veggies and meats. But my most favorite thing to grab on the go would either be pizza or fries. Both of which I am no longer allowed to have. :(

I actually like the hot dog vendors that sell the hot dogs. They are always cooked right and not all, but some aren't left in the hot water. Those vendors that also sell the snacks like the bread pretzels or the cookies really hit the spot. There is just something about me and hot food. I like food when its hot because when it's hot, it's also fresh.

Street foods are not recommended due to health reasons. They are unhygeneic. The vendors are themselves dirty, and so is the food with all the dust and pollution around.

It's the same with me. I have eaten what some people would consider "horrible food" in my life, but as a gourmet cook and former (on hold) food writer, I can tell you that the one time I got nailed was at a high class product roll-out buffet... The food was extremely well prepared but some things like prepared(frozen) crab puffs should never be under a heat lamp for more than 20 minutes... It was like eating an unexploded bomb! LOL!

I didn't know this. I moved here a year ago from North Carolina and never knew much about Philadelphia. But my grandson is in school there and I''m right at the shore. I need to come hang out in town. Are there any falafel stands? I fell in love with it in Berkeley. Mmm now that's food. A good hot dog on the street is like few other things- the only way I'll eat them. Thank you- this sounds super.

Here in Amish counrty Lancaster Pa we dont have many street vendors. There is one lady who sits on the corner with a huge driveable hotdog cart?/vechile but she cooks the dogs fresh. Other then that we dont have any street vendors. There is always the farmers market mmmmm they got some banging food there.
