What's the point in having guidlines?

Guidelines state "Make sure you search for existing topics before starting new discussions." What is the point of having guidlines if no one is going to follow them and keep copying people's discussions. I can see if it were having once or twice. I mean there are only so many topics to cover and you are bound to write about something similar as someone else, but I'm finding more and more of my being copied and simply reworded and it is not like when you point it out to them they say, oh I'm sorry! Seesh, guidlines are there for a reason. Rant over!

This is something not only a problem here but in many online communities. Quite a couple have come up with a check after posting something that it'll ask if it's not there already and shows the top 5 or 10 most similar subjects, something which would be good here as well.
Also when text is completely the same or too identical in many of these places the topic can't be posted at all to begin with.

Totally agreed. I don't know but it seems like it's been worse lately. I have been guilty of starting the same topic, but I do search, but obviously not using the right keywords, bah! I feel bad once I realize it though. I think you are just too popular Rose ;)
