Not what the founding fathers had in mind?

My hubby and I had to put gas in the minivan today. As we are pulling up to the gas station to fill up at $3.50 a gallon and joking about too bad cars didn't run on milk he looked at me and said "I don't think this is what our founding fathers had in mind." I said meaning what? And he said a nation that seems to be based upon capital greed, prejudice and disrespect for common sense. I think he may have a point. What do you think the founding fathers had in mind? Or is the point mute because of the way society has developed over the last couple hundred years? What do you think the founding fathers would say about the US today?

I think what the Founding Fathers had in mind was a system that allows a person the most realistic freedom to pursue happiness the way the see fit. They understood that it would mean some people wouldn't succeed, but if you don't have the right to fail, you don't have the right to succeed either. I think today the Founding Fathers would look at us and wonder why so many people are willing to give up their freedom for the illusion of security.

I think you're right. Do you think the pursuit of happiness is a lot harder than it used to be financially? Or do you think that we need to get back to focusing on personal happiness and not materialistic things?

the pursuit of happiness is supposedly what will be foremost in our minds. but, the way we do it now, is definitely way, way much different than how our forefathers envisioned it. for them, it was having a close knit family in a stable condition. stability before is not the same way as we perceive financial stability now. it was being able to provide for the family a place which will hold the family securely in terms of food and to be able to produce the needed cash whenever the need for it arises. now, happiness and contentment is hardly attained by anyone anymore.

It's hardly attained because too many people are looking for what makes them happy, instead of happiness itself.

That is a profound thought. What did our founding fathers intend? I don't think they had any idea that this is how our country was going to be in this day and age. I don't think they could have possibly imagined it. Honestly I think that the founding fathers meant that they only wanted freedom from the English and excessive taxation and to have the freedom of church and state. Our country has gone so far downhill since that time. I have seen many good things happen in the past, but I have seen many bad things happen. Why is our gas prices up to almost $4.00 a gallon? Greed that is why. We have lost our way in this world. Thanks for posting this. It was thought provoking.

Where I live it's only $1.89 a gallon. I'd pay that as opposed to $3.50 in a heartbeat!

It is exactly what the founding fathers had in mind... Capitalism... That is precisely the government our founding fathers wanted to have, that is why our country is one of the very most capitalistic and least socialist country in the world, yet we are also the richest nation.

I think the founding fathers would be appalled at how big and intrusive government has become. They would also be shocked at how much money is spent on congressional, senatorial and presidential campaigns. Lloyd

the world is very much different today, that is, if compared to how it was during their years. if this is happening to the rest of the world, it will be not at all surprising to be true to your country, too. besides, if we will be counting on common sense, i believe only so few people have it. i don't know why it is called common sense when in fact, it is among the most uncommon ones which we can find around us.

That's another favorite saying of my hubby, "Why so they call it common sense when it is so uncommon?" That's true. I really don't know when people went astray, but it is saddening.

I think they would be bummed out to see what we've become. Maybe they'd be impressed by some of the technology, but the values in this country have gone downhill.

I really think they would be sadden to the fact that all our rechnology is getting sold to other countries and no more mom and pop store. It says pursuit to happiness the poor pweople like us are getting left out of that as the gas mongers are robbing us of that I think we should make are cars back like they used to be without computors in them and every one could fix tier own car and we wouldnt have to have this sythitic stuff gas oil all that broke down to fit the cars of today are gas was simplier back then and it smelt good lol

I doubt this country is anything like the founding fathers invisioned. We have come so far from their days that I'm sure if they came here and looked around they would go into shock. I'm not just talking about the advancement in size and technology but in thoughts. The thought that the government is supposed to be a super parent and decide what is best for others. The way that people scream for freedoms and rights but then turn around and in the same breath deny others the same. That instead of the majority ruling this country it is a minority that have very deep pockets. I'm sure if they are watching they are scratching their heads and wondering where do we go wrong.

If any of the founding fathers came back today I think they would take one look at how the country is being run and cry. The Bush administration has taken a path so far from what they envisioned that they would be appalled.
