When shopping do you keep a running tab in your head?

When I go grocery shopping I keep a mental tab in my head of the prices of my purchases as I go along. My hubby thinks I am crazy. I think we spend more when I don't do it. What about you?

I really think that I should! Frequently things will look good to me and they will not have been on my shopping list but I pick them up anyway. Then I get to the checkout to discover that I have spend too much money! I know, why don't we invent a shopping cart that has a built in calculator on the handle! We might never have to work again! Ha!

What a great idea, I wonder why they don't do that. I would use a calculator on the shopping cart.

Hi, Yes I do add the prices in my head. I add a little more than what it really is. For example if the item is $1.75 I would round it to $2.00. that way when I get to the cashier and it is less than I added, I feel that I saved more money. When my husband comes with he puts everything in the cart and we save no money. lol

I round up to, just in case and it feels like a bargain to me when it comes in less.

I was born with an abacus in my head. Or a calculator. But they didn't have them when I was born. Hahahahaha!! I am very good at calculating items in the stores. I always tell the clerk before hand an estimate pre-tax and I am almost always right. Usually within a few cents. I make bets with my wife on the amounts and she always loses. This is just a gift I have and I love it a lot. Thanks for this discussions also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We're on a tight budget so I always keep a calculater to keep track of the total we spend. If I don't keep track we do tend to go over budget.

I try to keep a running tab of how much money I am spending so I keep within the budget and the cash I allowed myself to shop. Otherwise, I have to break out the credit card and I hate doing that. I amaze myself that I almost get it right down to the last penny. Today I went to Target and I was only off about seven dollars. I do save more money this way.

Sometimes I amaze myself too and get within a few dollars and think I should go on the price is right.

i do if i have a set spending amount. But otherwise i do not. I do all of my major shopping once a month and it is a pretty planned process, i know which stores i can get the better prices for different products so i make my list accordingly and i know that i wont spend more then i need to even if i dont keep track. But even if hubby thinks your crazy if it works keep doing it.

When I have lots of money I don't do it as much, but when I have just enough I count.
