If you are new to Linux my suggestion is to choose a desktop distribution like Mandriva or Ubuntu.
I currently use Mandriva 2007.1 Spring Edition and I'm very satisfied of it.
It is simple and fast to install (about 25 minutes) and in particular easy to use.
When you use Linux you are more secure when surfing on the web because the most part of software viruses are executable files made for windows, so what you have to is to install and configure a firewall to prevent intrusions or your machine.

download cd images of ubuntu linux from www.ubuntu.com or get them as free cds from http://shipit.ubuntu.com

I'm a RedHat user myself, but ubuntu is also a good distro. You can download Fedora core for free from here:
