The nature of truth

I recently read The Life of Pi, and the storyline is great, but then you get to the end and he tells a different story. At first, I didn't like the ending, but I think the point is about the nature of truth. While his story changed most of the facts remained that he was shipwrecked, his companions were killed by each other, and he survived x number of days at sea. So what does it matter what the story was? Why not stick to the story you prefer? If you've read Life of Pi or another book that makes you think about the nature of truth, I'd like to hear what you think.
