Recently i formatted my computer. After installing McAfee anti virus, the system firewall turned off. I enable it but it did not work. Then I uninstalled the anti virus and got the same result. Is there any way to enable the firewall or shall I reformat the system? My OS is XP.

Yes! That really happens especially if the antivirus that you have installed has its own firewall protection. If it was installed in your computer, your windows firewall will automatically be turned off. This happened because there will be a conflict when these two firewalls are turned on. It would also hang your computer tremendously, does making your machine useless to use. If I were you, I suggest that you use an antivirus that does not have a firewall protection. Windows firewall is enough to save your computer against malicious viruses. Hope this would help. Have a nice day!

Mine shut off automatically when I installed Norton, I was told that is because your Antivirus has it's own firewall inclused and uses that one. I guess both can't work at the same time.

The system firefall is useless anyway so never mind. Go to www.zonelabs.com and install their free zonealarm firewall, it ought to work with your anti virus and is a lot better than the system default.

I don't have a lot of faith in McAfee. Do you have Windows Defender? If not, I believe you can download it from Microsofts Update site for free. A couple of years ago, I had the same problem you're having. I think I got a virus that was actually disabling my firewall! My hard-drive got so messed up I replaced the computer and I now use Spyware Doctor. Good luck!

I used to have McAfee firewall. I'm an aol user so I believe it came with AOL. I think it slowed down my system a lot and it wouldn't allow me to download some software. I got fed up and I uninstalled it. Thank you for starting this discussion. I think I will have to try the free versions that have been given in the answers. I'm sure there is a way to enable the firewall instead of reformatting the system. I use windows defender but it never finds anything. Always says: your system is running perfectly lol The best one that find spyware is Adaware. I run it everyday. The other one is Spybot, it does find some bad things from time to time.
