Hello myLotter and friends Yesterday I saw a old people still working in mall. When I saw him I really had sad feeling. He should be at home, watch TV with his grandchild or sitting in restaurant with his friends. But he still working as a cleaner. As a grand child and daughter, i want my parent (they old enough) to stay at home or just go shopping or traveling with their friend. Is time to relax for them, many years they works for their kids and always take care of us. What do you think about that friend? Do you agree that older people still working? Thank you for reply

It is really sad that grandparent still working. A right feelings has grown in your mind. Ofcourse he should be at home enjoying something with his grand child and daughter. Where is the problem here? What is the reason may have to do work of him? Firstly, may be he has no child. Secondly, he has child but they don't looking after of him. If second is true then it is also bad news for them soon they will face this situation like him. little_angel, you love so much your family your quality of discussion express it. What is the condition of your grandmother? Is she well? Wish good luck of you.

If you've ever tried staying home doing nothing for a week you'll realise why some senior citizens decide to go back to work. Just because a senior citizen is working as a cleaner does not mean that that's the best paying job they could find... The relatively stress-free tasks of the job probably mirrors what they'd do at home to kill time...however, the differences being that they can get out of the house and earn a little spending money. Of course, on the flipside, there are senior citizens who work because they need to to survice and it's sad that all the taxes they've paid during their working lives do not help them later in life...

I too got concern for old people who struggle to make the ends meet. If the children or grand children minds, they can give a peaceful retired life to their parents or grand parents in the old ages. Some old people take up jobs, just to pass the time.

Sometimes, we find sad when we see old people still working for we wanted our parents to be at rest by these time. That is what we want, but what about what they want. Many old people prefer still working due to health. many old people when they start resting change lifestyle, their health usually go down abruptly and die. its not a good thing to say but they happen. the same case with my mother in law , she is now 86 but keep on working and she is still strong and dont want to stop. We simply see to it that she is happy. thank you and good day to you.

I think that it depends on the person him/herself. i do not know what you mean by old - and I think the retirement age varies a lot from one country to another. Here the retirementage is 67. You may choose to retire at 62 but then you get a much smaller pension. The government also encourages people to stay working longer than 67. We have a shortage of workers these days. many older people really want to work as well. more and more older people are of perfect health and still feel they have a lot to contribute to society. they have koowledge young people don not have yet. I think people should be able to work for as long as they like - if they have jobs where it is safe. i also think that people should be able to retire sooner than 67 if they feel they need to or want to.

It is sad when older people have to work when they should be enjoying life. But sometimes they have to to make ends meet. Sometimes family cant help as they are struggling to raise their family. The other side though is that there are some older people who still want to work and enjoy it. My father is 77 and although he doesnt do an actual job, he likes to keep busy by doing volunteer work and other activities when he can. At the moment he cant do much as he has a fracture in his leg and a bad shoulder. Best wishes, angel

I know I dont know if some is trying to occupy their time and trying to stay busy or what.I know my grandfather is 81 and he works part time at a church.I think its because he wants to stay busy.It can't be because of the money because he gets 3 monthly checks. At that age I want to be relaxing and not working.Maybe I can find a hobby to do to keep busy.

Yes i agree with you but their are some old man or woman really need to work to live and to have a living. I really feel very sad for them spending all their life for work. They don't have any families to work for them or if they have, the income that their children or grandchildren has is not enough to support their daily needs. Working old people is common nowadays because of the financial status that we are facing right now specially in our country, Philippines.

I am sorry to hear about that in Philippines. But we must take care older people more, because we can grow because of them. God bless you

Yes Angel I feel very sad when I see them, even I saw many old people are still working that might because of the financial situation or the problem which they are facing at home, even I want to take care of my parents and grand parents when they become very old, yes it is a time for them to take a break but even they can't avoid it because of the situations around them ..I feel old persons should not work instead they have to take rest and spend time with their grand children and I hope if possible they should grow more spiritually ... Thank you

After struggling to keep end meets for many years, if you ask them to retire from the workforce, they may feel not used to it. It is their choice to continue working or not so I agree that older people should still continue to work. In addition, I have not seen old people going to work with a three legged clutch. Being old is not being useless, due to life experiences, an elder may transfer some of their life experiences to the younger generations.

Thank you for your response. being old doesn't mean that being useful, they can still work just to make them keep active. God bless you

sometimes we can say that old people like our grandparents should stay at home and relax.but for me its still okay if they contnue working though they are old because keeping them at work will also keep them alive provide that they will not over do things that would lead them to have a stressful life.Because as people grows old, they need someone to talk to and if thos old people would stay at home and do nothing they will easily get bored and tired and that would make them sick.so at least if they are out working they can interact to other people so they wont feel bored. for me i dont care if my rand parents are still working as long as they wont go beyond thier capacity to work.there should be a certain level on upto what level they will go on working that is because thier time are limited to do a hevier task because they are old enough to handle heavy and complicated task.and i believe engaging oneself to a certain work would make time run too fast,we become an aware of the time,so days and week would run too fast compared when you just stay at home and do nothing time is too long and dragging thus it will make one bored.

I also know of some grand parents who are still working. They say the job makes them active, and makes them feel they still are very useful in the community. I personally have nothing against it as long as the elderly is physically able to do the job and the job is not very tiring. I notice that senior citizens who are still working are less prone to diseases.

I think old age is just equivalent to the childhood days...if u think that way...the grands must be adored n preserved as in case of a baby...u c they had to toil when it mattered n its really inhumane to throw ur ancestors to fight the odds when its beyond their mental n physical capacity..

I think it depends on the situation. If the person (senior citizen) wants to work, then I think it is perfectly fine and even a very good thing. Some people just don't like to stay at home. They want to do something productive that keeps their minds sharp. Plus, these people have loads of experience that they can draw on to teach their younger co-workers. I only wish that the kids around here who are working (and who are not working) would look toward our working senior citizens as an example and try to model their work ethic. Now, if the person is working because he/she has to in order to survive financially, the situation takes in a whole different meaning. I think that once we reach the age of retirement, we should have the choice to work should we want to and we should have the choice to go leisurely about fun activities if we want to. I have seen many senior citizens who have no choice but to work because they have too many people depending on them...usually their children or grandchildren. I think this is a horrible injustice. I think that when senior citizens work to support their adult children who are able bodied and are either lazy or compulsive spenders (or both) then the situation is sad and the younger person(s) should get off their rear end and go to work!

If they are healthy, why not? For example my father is very ill and he must relax more. But he is a person with strong energy and desire for work, so if he has nothing to do- he moans, screams and drives us nuts.So he allways tries to find something to do to keep himself busy. I think that most of theese old people work because they dont be treated as outsiders, because they need money or they just want to be busy with something.

Unfortunately, some elderly people have to work, even after retirement simply because retirement just doesn't cut it. Some of them may hate working, but others of them may enjoy it. Some people have worked so hard their entire lives, when they hit retirement they don't know what to do and would rather go out into the workforce, working part time because they find it more entertianing than sitting at home doing nothing. If they want to work, more power to them.

my dad still worked until he was almost 70 and would've been working if only he didn't die. First, he was not the kind of person who could stay at home doing nothing. Secondly, my mother never works all her life and they have 3 children. Even when we all work, there won;t be enough money to cover everything like medication, food, mortgage etc then we have our own family so that's additional expenses already. It's very fortunate that over here people have health care.

Listen up my little Angel. I'm a Grandfather 73 years old and I'm still working everyday. I'm so proud and so happy that I am able to work! Very few people my age are able! I could have retired years ago but chose to do what I enjoy doing. I'm a beekeeper who Loves his work! I can't imagine being retired, with nothing to do, but watch the Grandkids or sit in a Restaurant like a Bump on a Log. You don't need to be Sad about me still working. Instead you can be Happy, and go and Sit in a Restaurant and do NOTHING!
