I get a newsletter from Japan, it is written by an American with Japanese parents but who grew up in America. He has since moved back to Japan and has a family and a mail order business. In his newsletter he gives his opinions and views of the differences between American and Japanese life, and tells of things that he sees and notices as he goes through day to day living with his family.
One thing that he talks about regularly is the difference in the cuisines of America and Japan. In a recent newsletter he talked about Natto, fermented soy beans.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they know about it and whether I can find it here in the United States to try it.

You can buy it in oriental food store. I have few locations here in Chicago and suburbs. I don't buy Natto, but I buy a lot of Misso soup that is made on fermented soy beans....

I have never purchased or eaten natto, but I have seen plenty of pictures. It looks like slime to me. I have also read that it is an excellent source of vitamin K and some other nutrients. I have thought about looking for it but am not serious enough to go way out of my way for something that looks so disgusting, especially when I have read that others who have tried it find it very difficult to get down. I would guess you could probably find it at Oajimaya (don't know if I spelled it right) but I know thats a Japanese grocery store chain. Probably any place that has a really good selection of Japanese specialty foods and ingredients would have it.
