Smoking in your car.

There was a talk not too long ago that there should be a law against people smoking in a car that has children in it. It was a big deal here in South Carolina and alot of people got upset about the talk of a law stating that you couldnt smoke in a car with your child is against the rights of the parents. This conversation has pros and cons and I can see both sides to this. Is our government getting to the point to where they can tell us what to do and when to do it? Are we allowed to make our own decisions as far as what is right for our children or do we need their laws to show us the way?

Well when you consider the effects of second hand smoke & the fact that a car is a small confined airspace it only makes sense to not smoke in it with a nonsmoker or child. Unfortunantly since common sense is becoming so rare it may be necessary for the goverment to give people a wake up call. Its a shame, I'm all for letting the idiots whipe themselves out, but lets keep the inocent bystanders out of it.

Well I think that people shouldn't smoke in cars at all unless they keep their windows closed. Lots of times when I am driving, someone in front of me will be smoking out of their window and then the smell of it comes back and gets in through the vents of my car. Why should I have to be subjected to that nastiness in my own car when I have all of my windows closed to begin with?

I agree with you here... the Government have enough to say in the running of our lives anyway, and the rearing of our children is our responsibility, nobody else's. So let's cut the trivia and get down to resolving some of the problems we've caused in the World with warfare and fights for power, and leave the general public alone. The Government is elected to "lead" the countries in their best effort to create a peaceful, crime free place for their voters to live in and personal lives should not be the target of their control. Let me say that I sometimes smoke in a car if I'm on a fairly long journey and only if the driver and passengers are in agreement with it. Smokers are not callous people, and the majority of them consider others, so if in agreement, I open the sun roof and the window beside me to allow the smoke to vacate the car as early as possible. I feel that this should be left to people's own discretion and not be "dictated" by somebody who is doing a poor job of running their own life, let alone everybody else's. Ok... I step down off my soap box, to pass you Brightest Blessings for a great day! :-)

Well, I am a smoker, but I don't smoke around my kids, not in the car or in the house. I came by this on my own and that is completely different than someone trying to force me to do so. However, the government reasoning for this (main reason really) is to cut down on health care costs, by enforcing common sense. It should be common sense not to smoke around your children, but it appears it's not. Do I agree with this law? Well here is how I look at it, it can be seen as a form of protecting the child's right. Our children have a right to grow up in as healthy environment as possible. However I can also see where people are tired of feeling like the government is getting way too far into our business and we are loosing more and more rights. But in the end, to be honest I would have to side with what is best for our children. So I do support this idea. In fact they are trying to pass it as a law here as a state law.
