Revision - How do you revise for an exam?

It's a bit late for me to pick up any tips now as I'm already in the process of taking my exams but I'd still be interested to hear what you do in preparation for exams. I have simply gone through my lecture notes and read from some suitable books. I think this is a pretty passive system and I expect quite a few people will have revision timetables etc. and a more active approach than I have. So, what type of revision do you do and what was the last thing you revised for?

I tend to prefer to go through my notes and will sometimes get a small group together to discuss the subject - kind of round table - depends on the topic.

I've met with a friend recently and we've been asking each other questions that might come up - it's been pretty useful (I think).

I usually read the best book referred by the professors at a rapid pace before the exam. After finishing the book i go through the main points like the headings of the text and jot them down if necessary. Sometimes I even make use of Mnemonics as a method of remembering the a list of important points within a lesson. The preparation for the exams can be made in a more productive way by creating a organisational chart of the whole lesson. This helps to keep the whole lesson on our finger tips. But ofcourse, before doing this the whole text must be read atleast once. Even if you don't this method helps to fetch more marks as we know the important points. Mnemonics, as I stated above is the best method to remember all the important points to be covered for a particular question. You can make funny sentences using the first letter of each of the point. The more creative you are the more easier it is to remember.

I have found mnemonics very useful in the past.

When I was a student, the night before the exam day, I would go to sleep early, that was right after dinner. At this time, all of my housemates were studying for their exams. I would then wake up at about 3 or 4 am and then start to study while all my mates were sleeping. I woud continue studying all the way until it was time to take the exam. By doing this, everything would still be fresh in my head. I would then go to the exam hall, take the exam, come back and catch on some sleep. That was my way but I do not suggest that you do it since it worked for me does not mean that it would work for you. Good luck with your exams!

I avoid even thinking about the subject in the morning before the exam so I won't be trying that approach lol. Thanks for posting though!

I tedn to read through notes I have made and write down important stuff which I think i will need to know. The i revise the things i have written down. Sometimes i will write things over and over again until it sticks. I also find that listening to things helps me, Like at the moment i am Revising King Lear and i am finding that reading it whilst listening to the audio tape is helping me remeber important facts about the play.

I usually just go through my own notes and learn from summaries, then make a bunch of test exams and see what I don't know enough yet to study on that further.

Sounds like a good approach to me.
