My dogs have started something new lately....

sometimes my husband and I will annoy our little dog Shammy cause he is funny when he gets riled up, however lately if we sneak up on him and grab his tale and/or grab his side he turns around and bites our big Labrador, Buca, as if it were his fault, not ours- sometimes he really scares poor Buca. We treat them both the same (spoiled) but I have never seen this behavior before, we've had dogs for years and this is totally new to us..it's like he blames Buca for us bothering him, but yet when we do it to Buca, Buca doesn't bite Shammy like that. Any idea why he is doing this, I thought it was funny at first but now Shammy doesn't even want Buca looking out "HIS" window-- he will sometimes bark or snap at Buca for standing next to him. Any help appreciated.

Let the younger Lab go running outside, by himself once in a while, witout the older dog... sometimes Labs like to discover their "own spaces" as they grow and this display of aggression is really a "territorial" thing... Labs are also known for their since of humor, too... so don't be surprised when they "play with their teeth"... the older dog will not bite at the younger one unless really hurt, it's kind of a sibling thing... so don't let it scare you... Communicate with Dogster and see if you can get more info about your particular situation: http://www.dogster.com Have a great day! :)

Thanks peaceful - however Shammy, the little guy, is not a Lab he is a dachsaund and he is the older dog (8)...... Buca is the black lab and is only 4. I was thinking Shammy is just getting to be an old crap- but 8 is not that old.

Dachshunds can be aggressive, as they are born hunting dogs, (for some reason, i thought you two Labs)... This particular breed does tend to be aggressive at times, even with humans... imagine a stretched out "hot dog" shaped Terrier... even more so it's a good idea to allow it some space of it's own... Check out the Dachshund link below for some tips: http://www.cascadedachs.org/

Yes I know they are hunting dogs- this guys loves to chase rabbits and stuff when we walk - he even treed a raccoon. But he has never done this before, it's weird- I just worry how he will react around kids and stuff too- we have lots of them in the neighborhood and the kids love him and he loves kids. Thanks for the link I will check it out.

Oh no- Poor Buca. We too have 2 dogs- A small Corgi (Liza) and a larger Boxer (Carmen)- Guess who rules the roost? Liza. It is so funny- they are both so jealous of each other- If I’m playing with one or even petting one the other comes over and tries to knock the other dog down to get the attention- When I’m petting Carmen- if Liza comes over Carmen will butt her with her head and push her away- Drives me crazy! Liza holds her own though- If I give them table scraps- Liza gets most of them- she will bark and bark at Carmen every time she comes near to eat! I haven’t figured out a way yet to stop it- I figure if they aren’t hurting each other I’ll let it be. Good luck with your dogs!

Thanks and yea, mine are jealous of each other too - like when i pet one the other wants attention- same as yours. I think Shammy is just getting older and cranky- which concerns me a little- guess I'll just have to keep my eye on them.

Hmmmmmmmm I really don't know why he has started this Check him over and make sure he is not unwell as that could be the case Dogs have a strange way of showing when they are not well If Gissi is not well he will growl at me for no reason so you see there are different ways
