I know a couple individuals like that. Everything is a competition. Also once I was babysitting and this guy about 65 came whipping into the driveway at Kelsey's just as I was crossing the driveway and almost hit the little girl I was watching. We exchange a few words & then I asked him if he purchased the car to make him feel better about his manhood if you get my drift. lol

Your discussion made me think of Shrek and how they suggested Lord Farquaad was compensating for his small size lol.
Guessing here but maybe some people feel they have to have bigger and better to rub someone's face in it because they are miserable (make sense?). It could go along the lines of bullies, bullies bully to make themselves feel better. It could also just be a status thing.
Now I admit I love to have the last word, I don't know why but I do. I will even go so far as to say fine as I shut the door, so even if the person says something I didn't hear it so I got the last word lol. Childish, I know, but I just can't help myself. Actually I might know the answer to this one... I can feel in control when everything else is out of control by having the last word, make sense?

LOL omg! I am laughing my butt off. That is so funny about the door! That is a great point about feeling in control, I wouldn't have thought of it!

I always have to have the best and the most expensive thing, however I don't think it's because I have to compensate, what should I want to compensate for!? I have everything I want :-)

I have a friend who has been like that since childhood. He always has to have the best of anything. If we go fishing, I'm happy with a cheap rod that does the job, but he needs his (obscenely) expensive one - the best you can get.
I don't think he's compensating for anything though, he's just naturally competitive. His father is exactly the same. They don't like to do something unlessthey can excel in it.

Yes I do-- I know a couple of couples like that- It drives me crazy- I buy something- they buy something bigger and better- Jealousy I think- Got to out due everyone- Like they have something to prove- They also have a lot of debt- trying to out due everyone- This even stays true about kids stuff- I bought my daughter a cell phone- I don’t even tell them (they are family)- they rush right out and get one for their son- A whole year younger and no need for one- I buy a game station- they run out a buy a PSP and a new playstation- These kind of people drive me crazy!

I know quite a few people who have to have the name brand things and make darn sure you know they have them. I kind of feel sorry for them alot of time. I'm just as happy shopping at Goodwill and knowing I got a great deal. What bugs me most are the people that no matter what you have done they have done it biger, better and faster than you did.

That too! That also irks me. And I know many people that tell me what their ridiculous car payments are and are PROUD of it! Like a $900 car payment is nothing to be proud of in my book!

One of my best friends from childhood was like that. I'm not sure why she was my friend. lol
When we were really little, she was really poor, but then when she got older and her parents separated, her mom started dating a really rich guy and my friend became so materialistic. She always bragged about things he bought for her and places he took her, etc. I think in her case, it was more because she didn't want to be poor anymore, more than anything else.
What I hate is when people have all these nice things, and brag about it all the time, and then in secret, they whine and complain about being broke! My husband's first shirt is always telling the airmen that they can't afford all the nice things they want, but so many of them don't listen. We do have a pretty expensive car payment ($540) but the only reason we have it is because we needed to trade the gas guzzling two door truck my husband had before we got married, for when we had the baby. The only way we could get financing was on a new car (and we were upside down nearly $6000). That's not the case for the Airmen who have a stay at home wife with a brand new car sitting in front of their $200,000 house (BAH is $666 a month for an E-4). And they drive a brand new truck.
