Why did Dumbledore have the invisibility cloak?

I have seen a lot of discussion on this point on a different website, and I wondered what some of you guys might think about this. It's a question that never even occurred to me before, but it does have some interesting possibilities. If you think back to book one, when Harry first has the cloak and finds the mirror of erised, and Dumbledore tells him that he doesn't need a cloak to be invisible. Why, then, does James leave it with Dumbledore? Interesting questions, definitely. What do you guys think?

From what i remember in book one it is not definite that dumbeldore is the one who leaves the cloak for harry. Could it be that someone else had it and returned it to him, not too sure who this could have been though.

I have always assumed it to be Dumbledore because he was aware of it so soon after Harry had it. Maybe it was someone else and Dumbledore was just that in touch with the goings on at his school? That would certainly fit his profile in my opinion. Thanks for responding!

Maybe James Potter gave the cloak to Dumbledore because he knew, or sensed something was going to happen to him and Lily. Or maybe he just did it because he was paranoid and in case something did happen Harry could have it. Going down another road maybe Dumbledore caught James using it and took it away from him O.o

James leave it to dumbledore because he knew that his son will have a need to use it in the future. It also as a gift from a father to a son, pretty much sum it all right?Random thought " James has got nothing far more valuable to pass on to harry,so he decided to give this cloak "...lol..

Well if Dumbledore did give Harry the cloak it sort of fits in because he knows that Harry has it throughout the series.
