How do I prevent Altzeimers?

I ask this, because altzeimers is genetic in my family. It runs on my Fathers side. My father has it, his sister had it for 20 years before dieing of other causes, my fathers three aunties had it, & his grandmother (my g-grandmother) had Altzeimers. There is a lot more known about this condition nowdays, & I wondered if My Lotters were aware of any prevention methods that can be used? I am 49 years of age, & am in very good health.

this scares me too-my dad's mom and her brother both had it.i know you can be gene tested now to see if you are at risk, but there still doesn't seem to be much in the way of treatment. the irony was my grandmother always thought aluminum pans caused altzhemiers-so she never used any. and she got it anyway.

I don't want to be gene tested, as I don't want to find out the truth. Same reason that I don't want my daughter gene tested to see if she has the cancer gene her father had, that killed most members of his family.

Nutrition Action has a good magazine and their cover article is about Alzheimer's :) 1) Shoot for two or three servings of fatty fish each week. 2) Limit bad fats. Such as saturated and trans fats 3) Eat leafy greens Such as kale, iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, or spinach. 4) Look for vitamin-E-rich foods Examples leafy greens, vegetable oils, nuts, and whole grains. 5) Keep your blood sugar down. 6) Lose excess waist. Lose excess weight, and maintain an appropriate waist size. 7) Get moving 8) Keep a lid on blood pressure 9) Use your head. 10) Don't ignore depression And that is what the article suggested, if you want to read the whole article visit their website and start subscribing today :) http://www.cspinet.org

I do a fair bit if what you suggest, but my one failing is the fish. I don't like fish much. At one stage, we were quite keen on the crumbed frozen fish that one heats up in the oven. I wonder if that would be sufficient? I must exercise more too. I am viewing the site you recommended now. You were the 2nd person to suggest this.

If you don't like fish try the Omega-3 capsules or the Flax Seed Oil capsules, frozen (without the breading) fish is good! You don't want fish with the breading because it has been fried so that adds more fat and calories. Keep your mind active and get active and then I think you will reduce your risk.

One simple idea is to train your brain and memory. There are some exercises for it. And add more nuts in your diet. The nuts stimulate the brain cells.

I love nuts & eat them fairly regularly. I am trying to keep my brain active, especially with new activities, such as being treasurer of Weight Watchers.

Alzheimer's is a topic very near and dear to my heart. We lost my grandmother to this disease. I am also in the process on now losing my mother. She is in the final stages of the disease and has about 2 weeks left to live. It is so heart breaking!!! My mothers sister may now have the disease as well. So it does run on my mother's side of the family. It is very scary to think that I may also get this disease one day. I try to keep my mind active all the time. I am on the computer alot, all that reading is suppose to help your brain cells. I also do alot of find-a-word books. I like to keep my mind busy. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease. I pray that there will be a cure one day so no one has to suffer through this again.

So you are in the same situation as me. I think we have to keep our minds very active. Also trying new activities, not just the same level of thought evey day.

Here's a good link for alzheimers prevention information. Apparently, there is a lot you can do to prevent and slow down alzheimers. One of the things mentioned is that lifestyle and environment might be more influential than genes for some individuals. http://www.helpguide.org/elder/alzheimers_prevention_slowing_down_treatment.htm

Yes, I would imagine lifestyle is important. Even if I have the gene, I believe I can influence whether or not altzeimers is activated in me by my lifestyle. Thanks for the link.

Good luck with this. I know that creating new connections by doing puzzles and word finds etc can help that greatly and those game shows that are maddening may be just the ticket for keeping the brain functioning. I know other areas of the brain can help by taking over for certain functions. I would hope you could feed the brain with the things it needs to function and keep it going well into your later years, mobile and thinking well. Again, good luck with this.

I have read that you can prevent Alzheimers by being active. My father in-law has a problem with dementia and he is prone to Alzheimers I think so he is doing games like scrabble and playing games regularly. I think it's an advice that his doctor gave him. I wish you good luck and good health. And I hope you will not deal with this disease. Even if it is running in your family that doesn't mean you will get it. Good luck jennybianca.

Hi jennybianca, this is an incurable degenerative disease of the central nervous system, characterised by the relentless progressive loss of mental capabilities. It usually increases after the age of 65. You have a strong family history or Altzeimers. It is a good idea to consult a doctor to rule out any possibility. If so, the doctor will know what the next is/are. Chances are it can slow down the disease.

i first of all sorry to that health problem, may i know the symptoms, how we recognize it is Alzheimer health problem, any health problem you can reduce bu drinking more butter milk with little table spoon of salt and finger tipped pepper powder daily 3 times, then go for speed walk and always exercise but in smooth way,the every day two glasses of different fruit juices with out sugar mixed and ice cubes mixed reduces the viral infection growth of white tissues and aging reduces , health improves, maximum avoid refrigerator foods and storing foods, eat daily fresh fruits and fresh vegetables than storing in containers and freezes including drinking water just boil and drink after it cool naturally.

I don't know if this is true, but I've heard that the aluminum in most deodorants is linked to Alzheimer's. You might have to do some research, though. Try looking for one that doesn't contain aluminum.

I dont know a lot about it, but if its genetic, then its genetic, I dont that you can actually do anything to prevent it. Lets just hope that it misses a few generations.

I'f its genetic the chances of inheriting this disease is very high. I don't know if there is any medication to prevent alzheimer disease. i've read that Gingko biloba extract is an antioxidant that slows down the deterioration of brain cells but it does not prevent or cure Alzheimer's disease.
