Affiliate marketing?

I have been seeing a lot about affiliate marketing and businesses, but was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the subject. I don't want to have to invest anything to get started if possible. I can develop my own web site with no problems, but I'm not sure how to go about the actual affiliate part and who to go through. Any help is greatly appreciated.
