How do you stop a barking dog?

We have a 8 year old Neopolitain Mastiff that barks at everything...and sometimes i think he's barking at stuff he sees in his imagination. We'll get up to look and there is nothing there. It's driving us crazy. We even went so far as to use a shock collar which made me cry but they neighbors are complaining. We run a business out of our home and need to keep some type of quiet atmosphere. Help!

I have the same problem. I have several mini dachshunds in my back yard. They enjoy barking at the neighbor anytime she sets foot out of her back door. She has a big dog too that comes out to go potty and they go balistic when he is outdoors also. It doesn't matter though if the lady walks under her carport or in the yard or just opens her door, they bark.
My husband wants to try the bark collars. I hope it doesn't come to that. I'm also thinking of a wooden fence.

just shout back at them or ignore it and try to make false pretense to the dog like harming it or annoying it and it will never ever dare to bark again

I wish I knew how to stop a barking dog. Sometimes the only thing to do is get a good pair of headphones, put them on and turn the music up, or if you're away from headphones and music, invest in a good pair of heavy duty ear plugs.
