Who likes doing competitions or contesting?

Marilyn Monroe lips-shaped sofa - This settee is situated in the reception area of the five-star Sanderson Hotel, just off Oxford Street in London. I stayed in this boutique hotel as part of my Millionaire Prize Winning Weekend.

I started comping (UK word) about eight years ago. Since then I've won lots of fantastic prizes inluding a trip to Tuscany in Italy; a three night break in New York staying at the Waldorf Astoria; a weekend in a Surrey Tudor Mansion and the biggest of all, an amazing Millionaire Weekend, with the chance to win a million dollars. I didn't win the million but had a fab time staying at a five star London hotel just off Oxford Street, being pampered in their spa and spending £1,000 (about $600). They also included a meal in a top restaurant, a chauffeur driven limousine to take us anywhere we wanted to go and first-class rail travel. What did I do to win it? Just texted a message once a day for one month. I was one of three winners chosen at random. Other types of competitions I do include prize draws where I just send a postcard, with my name and address, to the promoter by a specified date. These might have an answer to a question. I do 'phone comps and lots of comps on the net. I also subscribe to two comping magazines listing all the contests in the UK. I enter slogan or tie-breaker comps but these are not my favourite - too much effort! My other competition wins include books, baby equipment, sweets, a ski jacket, up to £200 in money, a DVD player and lots of other smaller things. As you can tell I love this hobby of mine and I wonder if there are any fellow compers out there?

I was really into this a few years ago and l totally loved it. I won most of my prizes from radio stations. You had to be the right caller or answer some trivia of some sort. I have won many things, a trip to Mexico at a 5 star resort, fishing gear, dinners at really elegant restaurants, tickets to concerts, money, all kids of nice things. I did them all, it was my hobby. Some of my family and friends thought l was nuts when they would see me filling postcard after postcard with my info on it to send to the promoters. When the prizes started rolling in thats when they figured l wasn't so crazy, and that l was just lucky. All l would say to them is you can't win if you don't enter. It's a great hobby l must get into it again. Thanks for posting and Happy comping!

Hi lifeoriley, Great to talk to you. Yes I know what you mean about people thinking you're mad event trying because 'nobody ever wins these things'! I used to say they won't if they don't try. Like you, as soon as I started winning they all wanted to have a go. I'm glad I've got you interested again. Do you know of some good sites on the net for comping? I get an email from the magazines I subscribe to every two days telling me of good comps. Generally I try to do about 30 or so a week. According to other compers this will generate the most wins. The last biggish thing I won was £100 ($60 approx) with a survey in a magazine but I would love a car or another luxury holiday. That's what's so exciting, when you win it's usually 5 star treatment all the way. Thanks for your reply. It seems as though we have other things in common. I'll have to read your other topics but it's getting late in the UK now, time for bed!

I tried to do some contest on line a few years ago but l didn't like all the pop ups and email l was getting from the sites. I found it hard to figure out what ones were legitimate. So l can't help you there. I wish you all the luck in comping! and... Welcome to mylot!

Hi nishdan01, Thank you for your reply. Your son, if it is he in your photo, looks a little young to be doing competitions. They do have competitions for children but usually for crayoning in a picture or doing a puzzle. He looks a lovely little boy and I hope he wasn't hurt when the laptop fell on him? I see you come from Singapore? I was in Singapore two years ago, 2 weeks before Christmas and I was amazed at how much you celebrate such a Christian festival over there. Everywhere we looked there were Christmas trees and decorations. It was very strange for me to be celebrating Christmas with all the heat! We stayed at Raffles Hotel and it was wonderful, we also went for a boat ride and saw your dragon in the harbour and visited the Botanical Gardens. Such beautiful and strange orchids and other amazing plants. We only had two days but packed in a lot and are hoping to come back one day.

I enjoy them, but haven't participated in many. Where do you find most of yours?
