Have you ever accidentally hit on or dated a relative?

Say you're at a party or a wedding and you spy a really cute guy or girl in the corner. You've never seen them before in photos, no one has ever mentioned a good looking (at least of this magnitude) relative in the past, and no one has introduced you. You figure maybe they're someone's date or a close friend, so you wander over and introduce yourself. The conversation is going well and suddenly your sibling or parent wanders over and starts talking to them like they're best friends. Confused, you interrupt the conversation to find out how exactly they know each other and you find out they're your second cousin! :) This very thing happened to my coworker's older brother at a wedding a few months ago. I thought it was hilarious and wanted to share and wondered.. has anyone else ever made this whoops? Or perhaps a bigger one when they accidentally dated someone they didn't realize was family (however far removed)?

Hmm this is very funny, lol! Actually, i have an experience but not totally a date. I was in school with my friends, and we are just chattering and loughing, later we found out that there is a new student in our classroom and he is really cute, i cant stop thinking of him, i always look at my back because his in my back..then when im at home, i told my mother about this guy and then my mother is loughing because he said that he is my second cousin so its very bad for me because im falling for him..lol!

Technically speaking, yes I'm dating a relative...but before you or anyone gets the wrong idea, we're related distantly and by marriage so it doesn't really count. His aunt is married to my great uncle (actually a half brother to my grandfather). If you really wanted to label the relationship I think it would be something like half first cousins by marriage once removed..."technically speaking" that also means our 3 sons are my step second cousins. I wish I could draw this out for you so it would make more sense. Maybe I'll play with paint shop later and give it a try!

Yes I did,and beleive me,it is not a pleasant thing to have happen. I was working in a bowling alley when I was just 16,and met this girl there,we only got each others first names, and dated for around 3 months. We fell in love, and I took the next step in asking if I could ask her father for her hand in marriage. When I arrived at the house,I was waiting in the livingroom for him to come in,and I saw a family portrate on the mantle,in it was a picture of my father, when I asked about it,I found out,he was my fathers brother, which meant I was asking to marry my cousin. I have not seen her ever since,we moved and just never got back together. So,yes,it does happen, and like in my case, left a couple of broken hearts. This tail is real and happened in the early 60's,and I still feel the pain. Blessed Be.

Oh that would be too funny to see their reaction. I have never done that but it was odd to find out that my husband was a distant cousin to my sister's husband. So my daughter's have an uncle that is their godfather and their cousin. I do laugh because we live in a small town and in my daughter's class their are only 3 boys and one is a cousin. I swear they are related to everyone in this area. I tell them all the time before they can date anyone they will have to do a blood test. I guess it can happen any where*L*

LOL. Ohhh how embarrassing! Thankfully, I've never had this kind of experience because our family is very small and close knit. And the same goes for my friends, I can't think of any of them who have had this experience lol. I think it would be the single most embarrassing thing to ever happen to anyone LOL.

Just think of what other will might think about the two of you. For me, its not worth it to hit on or dated a relative. Many people will not stop trying to ruin your relationship.

Oh my Breepeace, that would be awkward! Fortunately, I've never found myself in that predicament. Hopefully, never will. I have to ask: Was your co-worker's relative, the one who interupted the conversation, aware that your co-worker was 'hitting' on the relative? Meaning, did your co-workers relative come to the rescue, or was it 'happenstance' that the relative interrupted?

i thought one of my cousins were cute, but never tried to hit on him...anyway, he ended being gay, so i had no chance to begin with. i was an issue for me to date someone i was related to because of how big my extened family was. and because i didn't know my grandfathers side of the family, i could be related to a bunch of people i don't even know. i would so be embarrased if it did do that though.

yeah able to experienced... The time when I share it to my sister she told me that he was a relative... distant relative... I called him and told him the whole thing, he doesnt knew too and ask her family about our races and yes he did confirm we are relative. When we knew the situation we stop dating each other, thank god we didnt date for too long and I dont know what will be the reaction of my parents when they knew that I was seeing my distant relative. As years goes by, the time we saw each other again we just laugh to the things happen, I think it was the right choice of not continuing the "probably intimate thing" coz they say, family say that it was wrong...

I never had that kind of experience myself as my family is kind of closely knit and almost all of my cousins up to the second degree are familiar to me. So its very hard for us to be intimately close with each other. But I think that is really possible to happen meeting someone you don't know and be attracted and knowing later that you're blood related to one another.

Nope. Never had this happen. BUT.... I did have a cousin who was gorgoeous and I wanted to hit on him! lol Well, since I was adopted, and so was my dad, we weren't related by blood, or really on paper. It was my adoptive dad's biological sister's son. My dad was adopted by another family and found his sisters when he was older, which is when I met them. He adopted me from my biological father when I was 12 (my mom is my biological mom). Soooooooo, techincally we aren't related, but it still would have felt weird. lol He was a couple of years older than me and not interested, anyway, but my cousins and I all drooled over him anyway. :)

I once have had sort of a nice night with some girl one time and although we kissed nothing really came from it, a couple of months after that though at a birthday of a nephew of mine she was there as well. Like what are the odds, she didn't live nearby and where I met her wasn't exactly a location for my nephew to come, but perhaps she went out in places he went out I thought. Then suddenly some older people came walking back into the room with my aunt, apparently her parents. Making it a bit of a wtf moment already, then it came clear that she was a niece of my nephew. No relative of mine, but still a bit weird to have come across someone like that before actually meeting them as family of family, now what are the odds.
