I enjoy reading books. I love to read. I am not sure if I could work in the bookstore though. I would want to just be reading all the time and not want to help anybody. I hate to be interrupted when i am reading, abd I would be too tempted to be all around those books and not be able to help myself.

Yes, I agree. It would be hard having all those books around. I would want to read each and every one of them!

no one can be reading books while serving working hours. you may be able to pick some good materials at the time that you are there. i believe that this is the best thing that can happen to you during your stay therein.

I totally agree with you trinidad, as you may not know I myself work at a bookstore here in the Philippines. And we are not allowed to read books while we're on duty, we can only browse some when we're having our breaktime. I dont really like books at all before but when i got the job I started to have interest on books, im so used to it and now i already like books although i dont have the time and money to read lots. And the best part of working in a bookstore is we always know what's new and what's hot. I've been working in a bookstore for almost two years.

No, in fact I prefer to stay a librarian LOL! My BF had a second hand book shop a couple of years ago. I remember very well all the mess with storage, transportation, cash - thanks but no, thanks! I prefer to work in a library any time!

Library would be a great place to work if the salary would be a bit bigger. I really like suggesting books and doing internet search for clients who aren't so good in it.

at this time, my answer will be a no. my educational background is too far away from this kind of work. if i will be there for only a week, that will be fine. but to be there for months and years, i might find it to be a boring thing to be doing.

Its not that boring, its kinda fun. My colleagues are fun, talking to a lot of people is fun. Watching them definitely makes time pass quickly. But the salary sucks.

Despite of the low salary, I don't mind working in a bookstore:) At least it's less pressure and you have many time for reading. It's very nice!

We are not allowed to read while we're on duty, our job is to attend to customers' needs and inquiries. So we can only read some of the books when we're having our breaktime. But there's always an exception to that, And that is when our manager is absent woohooo!!!

yes I've toyed with the idea. it sounded great when i was younger. shelving books, getting lots of time to read the latest arrivals... but don't think I'd get much time to do that in a real bookstore. probably be very busy. in the big bookshops like borders, the staff always seem very stressed. so i guess in the end, it's just like working in any dept store. only if you work in a tiny bookshop with an owner who loves good books more than the profit margin, then it'd be cool like that. if I do work in one like that, i suppose i could do it for 5 years?

Or only if you are the owner hehehe. Then you can read anytime you like. And yes were always busy assisting customers.

i do love books and in fact have recently opened a little bookstore with a very good friend of mine. yes i would probably consider working in a bookstore but i don't think i will last because i would probably be reading most of the time instead of attending to my customers, LOL!

I have always wanted to work in a book storre. But until recently have not lived close enough to one to work in one. I would spend a lot of time just reading the titles. It would be a chance to read many books that I can't read now.

i love reading, i love book and i've always wanted to work in a bookstore...if only the pay is good. That is why, i want to open a bookstore one day...and it will only be full of books that i like (fiction, romance) so that only those type of readers who are sharing the same taste will be there. :D

I actually wanted to own my own bookstore. A friend looked into it once as we were going to do it together but we found that it would not be feasible in our small town. We have a "new and used" bookstore, across from the library, one chain bookstore and one local independent bookstore. Then there are the used books you can pick up at any of the secondhand stores - Salvation Army, Paws for Claws... and another hidden away second hand bookstore. We just don't have room for another one in this town. I did apply for a job at the library once but they received over 1,000 applications so you pretty much have to have an "in" to get a job there. I'll settle for writing the books now.

Hmmm, maybe i can apply for a job at some library, atleast there i can take a sit. At my work, we stand all the time except the times when we're arranging the books in the lower shelves, its excused hehehe.

Yes, I would. I used to work in the library and then I worked in a bookstore and I loved it. It is usually a very quiet place and you get to really know the authors that are popular and you always hear about the books from ones who read them. It is hard to not want to read all the time, but the one that I was in would let us if we had our other work done.

When I was younger working in a place where books were sold sounded like a dream (having free access to thousands of books, yum). It still sound like a good occupation but I love my actual job (I'm a programmer) way too much to give it up :)

Computer science was my course but i wasnt able to graduate and now i ended up in a bookstore. The con of working at a bookstore is the salary, i can save that much. Maybe i should quit this job. What do u think?

I would absolutely adore working in a bookstore. I doubt I'd get too terribly much work done, but I would be able to point customers towards the good stuff. I love the small bookstores rather than the giants like Borders or B&N. It's possible to build a relationship with the owners where they know what you're looking for and begin to set it aside for you when you come in. And you can trade your dud books in for other stuff that interests you.

Yes, I sure would. It's a quiet place and people are there because they want to be. Lots of hours on my feet would be the thing that means I could not do this work.

I love books, but stores and selling would be too fast paced for me. I have worked at a library and enjoyed that. It's more my speed and I actually had some time (not as much as you might think) to read the books. I also don't think you have to love books to work at a bookstore. When I worked at the library, some of my coworkers didn't like to read. That shocked me. I guess the same thing could happen in a bookstore.

I would love to work in a bookstore or to own one. This has been a dream of mine for many years. I even applied to work at a bookstore, but never got so much as an interview. I have, however, worked in the publishing business, so I guess that will have to be enough. I do spend a lot of time in bookstores (and a lot of money there too).

I do. Once, i proposed to a friend to open up her dream bookstore and i will be willing to work for her. i will even throw in book reviews for free. I will try my very best to be very accomodating to the clients and try to learn about all the books for sale. I really get frustrated if i go to a bookstore and teh sales person can't help me much except to look for a title i am looking for. i also like to catalogue things, so i will be able to be very busy if i am in the bookstore. plus if there is a coffee shop in my bookstore i don't think i can ask for more hehehehe.

Actually I would love to open a children's bookstore. I want one exactly like the one in "You've got mail". I even want it on the Upper West Side in NYC :)
