What is a soul?

I mean, what is it? Is it your conscious mind, or your sub-conscious mind? Is it like your shadow? When you die, does it pass away from you? Is it some ethereal thing that's whispy in appearence? What do you think your soul is?

I think "I am" what you call "my soul".

"I am" what? Is it your personality? Your likes and dislikes? Your sense of humor or lack thereof? Is it just the energy that your body produces? What about your thoughts? When Christians say they are "saving your soul from eternal damnation" what exactly are they saving? It's you, I get that, but if you had to picture it, draw a picture of it, what would it look like? How do you picture it in your head?

"I am" none of what you described above. I am the awareness or consciousness that is the basis of all that I see in this world. If this awareness is not there, the world does not exist(as far as I am concerned) for if I am not there, how would I know about something else? As far as I believe, this consciousness is Universal but it is ignorance that separates this awareness in a separate body. Just like the sun is reflected in a million pitchers of water, so also, this awareness is Universal, but the pitcher 'thinks' it is an individual consciousness. This reflection of the Universal is in my belief 'my soul'.

The soul is the essence of the person, what makes a certain person he is. A quirky yet simple explanation would be the soul is what gives serialmommy her "serialmommy-ness". In other words, it's what makes you, you. I can't say much about the ethereal or wispy stuff though, I don't buy into that stuff :)

I would have to say what makes me "me" would be my personality, not my soul. Are they tied? Sure. Are they the same, nope.

What do you mean "immaterial"? As in doesn't matter? How can it not matter? Or do you mean it is the part of a person that is not the body? That seems like an obvious answer with no real explenation.
