Whether you are a smoker or not, would you be for or against a proposal to ban smoking in public places? such as bars, restaurants, nightclubs, pool halls, etc. Many people believe that this is not only unfair to smokers (despite the health warnings, one in every 5 americans still smoke) but due to the fact this is supposedly a free society, it's a blatant breach of those rights a free world demands. So what do you think? for or against? and pleaseif you will, explain why

I believe that people should be allowed to smoke in public places. But the places where there are children around should have smoking areas. I feel that it should be the business owners decision whether to allow their patrons to smoke in their establishments. I am personally not a smoker and would not encourage others to do so but it is not my right to infringe on their right to smoke. It is not like smoking has been made illegal by law.

It is very true. They say it is legal to smoke but they are making it impossible to do so for those who chose to go down that path. That is not right.

I think it it a good idea. After all, we should have the freedom to smoke clean air. Not the other way around!

Thank's for your response, But, when you mention "freedom" it's not the governments right,in a free society, to infringe on the rights of others whether they smoke or not.It should be left up to the owners of businesses if they want to allow smoking or not. You also mention "clean air", well then, the next things they'll want to ban are , all cars, trucks, buses and whatever else is polluting our air today. where does it end?

It is the governments responsiblity to protect our freedoms, thus we should have the freedom to breath clean air. I agree that we should be looking for alternative ways to bunring fuel and such. My wife has asthma and when ever a diesel truck blows smoke, or someone smoking is near by, she has a hard time breathing.

I feel there should be ban on smoking in public places as smoker not only by smoking in public is affecting one's health. But is also affecting the health of passive smokers for no fault of theirs which has to be done away with. I feel as a non smoker i have a right to clean air and deserve to get it. And thankfully there are legislations banning smoking in public though implementation is very lax. Smokers are free to smoke privately but not at others people's expense.

Thank you for your response. So I guess what you mean when you say "smokers are free to smoke privately", what you actually mean is, only in their own homes. Because if this legislation passes, that will be the only place a smoker will be allowed to smoke.and that to me is not a free society, that is a dictatorship.I am a smoker and am well aware of how harmful it is, not only to me, but to others around me who don't smoke. But, i'm also considerate of this and do my best to make sure that when I do smoke,i'm not bringing harm to others. That is "my" choice, and should be the choice of all smokers. But I want to have that choice, not a government telling me what I can and cannot do.Let the owners of these businesses make these choices , not the government.

Great Topic Mari...I am a smoker (not proud may I add) But do think its a great idea to have smoking banned. Not only for the health for ourselves but the also for the health of others around us.

Thank you for your reponse.Like I mentioned in my last post. The next thing you know, they'll be arresting people in their own homes for smoking. It's bad enough smokers are treated like 2nd class citizens, on account of so many places banning smoking altogether. Now it's restaurants and bars.Let the owners pf these establishments decide whether or not to allow smoking or not.

Well thats a good one, to prevent chain smoking. Public smoking awareness should be created among smokers to save the nonsmokers.
