Best response doesn't end a discussion so that shouldn't stop anyone from responding. I see nothing wrong with responding to old discussions depending on the subject matter. It would probably be silly to respond to a 6 month old discussion about a current news item or someone's personal issues. But general topics that are "timeless" should be fine. Sometimes it's even a good thing to do. Timing makes a big difference as to how many responses a discussion gets. Posting at the wrong time can mean even a good discussion can get few or no responses. If people find and respond to them, they could end up getting the amount of notice they deserved.
