Writing Speed...how many pages a day?

Okay, so I'm working on another novel, and I'm ready to start writing, but I don't know how many pages a day I should write? I've heard some writers say they write the entire book within a few days, some take a few months to write a chapter. I would like to get a body of work out to the publishing world in a rather timely fashion, but I want the work to be of quality as well. Any writers in the MyLot community working on a novel, what is your speed? What is your goal for manuscript pages a day? I'm writing a Young Adult Fiction piece which should be between 120-140 pages. Thanks for your responses.

I usually try to write 10 pages a day when I have to work. On weekends, I up my goal to 25 pages a day. I don't do anything on weekends so I spend all day writing.

You have to work on the weekdays, what job do you do? I ask, because I'd love to become a full-time writer, but I don't want a job that takes up too much time. Are you able to support yourself? I'm sorry if the question seems invasive, but I've heard of writers living from near poverty to super affluent.

I'm a nanny. It's a fun job if you don't mind watching kids and cleaning the house occasionally. I find some time to write while I'm working. The pay depends on the people. I can manage on my own, I'm sure but I'm living off my mother until I get out of high school. I work 4 hours a day/5 days a week and still make more than my brother ever made working at Pizza Hut. lol.

A nanny? That's a cool job. It sounds as if you're on top of it with school, writing, and a part-time job.

My goal is to write a book, but I haven't really started writing yet. I have been to classes, workshops and author signings and it seems people go at different paces. One writer writes like a 9-5 job. One writer does an incredible amount of research on her books, so she takes a awhile. I would think for a good book, it would take awhile.

A good book needs to be handled with care. If you're writing like it's a 9-5 job, you could finish in a week or two, but if you have a few hours to spare, you need to allot more time for your work.

Writing speed depends on the author. Some people are able to write a set amount, then go back and throw out half of that in revisions. Others write slower and keep more. I think you need to develop a personal style that works for you, and I would suggest some experimentation. I think an average is 3-10 pages per day, depending on the time you have. I tend to spend more time writing than in revision (I have never written an entire book) with articles I write. I would say it takes me about 1 hour and 45 minutes to write about 3 pages. That's actual writing, not researching. Good luck on your writing endeavors.

I usually write about 2 chapters a day in rough draft, but spend considerable time revising, just because I like to make sure I say everything I want to say and to tie up loose ends.

Funny, writers block never really bothers me...i guess i am lucky :-) however, i used to be a full time, stay @ home writer, but didn't make much and now due to money constraints, i have had to get a job outside the home, but i still freelance... as for my book, its an ebook, which we will be selling on our website in the near future...as for another book? who knows! i have a ton of ideas lol (i write non fic)

I've heard that statistically, non-fiction writing is the most profitable and the most popular.

I feel like it *should* matter how many pages you write in a day? I don't want to get that feeling of being stuck in neutral, or undergoing writer's block. How many books have you written? Do you make a lot of profits and/or royalties off your work?

It varies, I can write about 2000 words per day, on really bad days I manage only 500 (I would consider 80-90 thousand words appropriate for a novel). The real question is how do you get published? Any ideas on that- that seems to take longer than the writing anyway.

To get published? I think one needs an agent, or one can know an editor and get your foot in the door that way. But the most essential thing one needs is excellent writing and marketing skills.

First off, every writer is different. I wrote my fist book within six months of starting, there was a month of a lul when I was stuck. My second book, probably less than that I just got it edited and sent of recently so it's kinda of hard for me to figure out exactly when I started writting that one. The whole time thing is up to you, in the end. Heck, even I think I'm gong too slow and then I try to speed up but that usually gets my details in the wrong places and I have to go back and fix it.

I recommend a good pace between speed and meticulousness. One doesn't want to write too fast he/she forgets important elements of the plot, but you don't want to write so slowly you never finish.

ive been writing now for a good number of years and have to say my typing speed varies depending how motivated I am to do it. I have often sat for days without anything of worth coming, on other days i can write up to 200 pages a day. I would have to say putting a figure on it does not work, it depends upon my mood blessed be

If I could just..lock myself in a room with my computer for five days. I could write an entire novel..200 - 400 pages long. As it is, it's hard to find time to write. When I do get the time, on average it's..20-30 pages in two hours. Ten maybe just twenty in only an hour, depending if I'm feeling rushed. But I'm told I write extradordinarily fast, I've known LOADS of writers who've taken years on a single novel. Writers like me? Books in only a few days? I don't think there's a ton of us. Find your own pace, realistically calculate how much time you can spend writing per day, or week..whatever works for you, and then see how much you can write within that allotted time. And then you'll have found your pace. Pushing that pace..may not be particularly be wise..but you know. Experiment, test the limits. Good luck!

I also write novels. But I think my speed is slow.If I'm very inspirational, I can write 10-15 pages one day.But if I don't have any idea about it, I may only write 5-6 pages a day.

Do what works for you. I think the number of pages one writes depends on the type of writer and reviser you are. For instance, some write quickly, just get the story down, without editing as they go along. Some use the brick laying method, where each word, each sentence must be perfectly crafted before moving on. Others, like me, use a combination. I spend more time on the revision process. I write a lot of notes along the way for tying up loose threads, reminders to change things, plot points, etc. There is no right or wrong way. It may take some time to figure out what works for you. I wish you the best. Hope you'll keep us posted on your progress...

Hi,Transformed! Woa,you are working on your new novel, congratulations! I think my speed of writing is too slow,I'm not sure how many pages a day I can write but when I involved myself into the writing mood,I can write more than 2chapters within a day;but if I'm not in the writing mood,I cannot write one word....

it depends that how much time i spend on this a day. usually if i give my full time to it, it will hardly take me to complete it in 15 days. there will not be any grammatical mistakes but if in the novel page something is written in bold or italic or change in the font, it will be very hard to judge that in which font it is. i will give it to you in the font you wish to. shorthand writing can be used if u wish to.. thank you

I really don't make goals, especially when I'm writing something such as a novel that won't pay off right now. I try and write when the mood strikes and I write as much as I can during that time. I don't try and push through it because I find my writing becomes dull and boring. No one likes to read a dry book, or even a dry spot within a book, especially if the rest of the book is excellent. I'd try more to make it a goal to write some every day, not to write so many pages a day unless you have a deadline. I'd rather have a great book, than one that is written quickly but lacks depth and interest.

Well, personally I'd say that you should write as many as you feel comfortable with. It would be great to get a maximum amount of pages a day but you'd burn yourself out fast. Don't set a goal, just go for something that feels right to you.
