I just read in my niece's magazine of all places ("Sweet 16") that the publishers of the Harry Potter series have decided that newest book "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows" will be printed on recycled paper. At 784 pages and a first printing to be at 12 million books this will save thousands of trees. I thought this was great news to read and it shows that some companies are thinking in the long terms. I think the publisher, Arthur A. Levine Books, deserves some credit for thinking on this issue before publishing.

Hehehe--OMG you were reading Sweet 16? Hey do you remember Tiger Beat? LOL--This really is good news...more publishers should be more tree conscious and publish their books on recycled paper too

Heheh had to look at it for memory's sake :) and yes I remember Tiger Beat as well. Got some great posters out of it as a teen. I agree I think more books should be published this way and I think they should be commended for doing so.

Lol...I used to have a subscription to Tiger Beat! Do they even print that anymore? It would just make sense for books to be published on recycled paper. I'm surprised more publishers don't already do that.

This is an awesome idea. I am glad that they are doing this and more books should be printed this way. too bad though that the final HP book is the only one printed this way. Or is it?

I have no idea on the previous ones, just this one. It could be they have in the past but didn't say so.

What? I mean that just seems like common sense. Why oh why aren't all books printed on recycled paper? Know what I mean? But yeah props to the Harry Potter people for taking this step.

Oh I agree with you there. It is going to drag big time. Just have to count down the days I guess and hope they go fast but with it being summer break I doubt it will. The summer always drags.

I have never read any of the Harry Potter books but they have been a best seller in our area for the last couple of years with all the children and are said to be really good books . I did watch bits and pieces of some of the movies they have out but never got into it that much to watch the whole movie . They must be good books though because they have been out on the market for awhile and I can remember a couple of years ago when one of my children wanted one for Christmas and I couldn't get over the price they wanted for just one book . I ended up I didn't pick it up and said they could try and borrow one from the libarary as the books were quite expensive .

I know the books can be expensive but all books seem to be that way now. I know the ones I get I wait usually till they are on sale or I get them as gifts, like for my birthday. I can't usually afford them when they first come out.

Considering the popularity of the Harry Potter books printing them on recycled paper is a truly great idea, so many copies of those books are sold, and it just makes sense. The issue over deforestation is such a big one, it nice to hear that a company that doesn't need good will publicity to promote the selling of a particular product is doing something like this. Lets face these books will sell regardless of the good will generated by the idea of the recycled paper or not, so he doesn't need to do something this positive, and there are times when using recycled paper can cost more not less, but I think in a case like this when a company is using such a large volume of paper it wouldn't facter in as much.

Exactly, the use of it isn't really going to change their sales any. It's just a good idea for them to do. Yes it makes the publishers look good but it really won't change their sales any on them. It's just good PR.

that was my point, the sales won't change, the publisher didn't need to do this for good PR, but they did it anyway. Nice to know that some companies will do it whether they need to or not.

It is a truly remarkable decision. I whole-heartedly support the publishers decision. Awareness and effort on part of all of us is required to make this world a stay as it is. We must all strive to keep the earth beautiful

I do too and I think more should be doing this. With how many books are published each year if they could even do a percentage of them in recycled paper it would make a huge difference.

Oh wow! That is so awesome! Think of all the prints of that book alone are sold! And to use recycled paper is a huge deal!!!! I so wish that other publishers would catch on to this! I have so many books and if I knew they were on recycled paper, it would be even better. :) Thanks for sharing! This is great news!!! :)

You're quite welcome. I'm just glad that I read that in the magazine. I hadn't heard of it elsewhere. I think it's great news overall as well and hope other book companies follow suit.

I think it is great too. There are to many trees that are took out already because of fires and others for wood. So recycled paper is a great idea.

While this is a good thing in some ways I feel a bit sad for the timber industry. I hate plastic, unless it's re-cycled, and I hate that so much of what we use today is not made to last and ends up on the tip. Where I live the last sawmill in the area closed down last year. This area grows lots of cyprus pine, my house is made of it. The closing of the last sawmill brought a nil employment situation to the next town. It's the same where I live. There are now no jobs. Tree plantations are managed and new trees are planted to replace those used. Trees are a renewable resource.

Oh I'm sorry that the sawmill went out and that it caused such a lack of employment in the area. I'm surprised though that it would close if it's wood that is used so much. Wood and paper is still used for so much that I don't see them ever being totally replaced. I do agree trees are a renewable resource but they do take time to renew. It's not an instant switch over and they do need time to regrow the trees. Using recycled paper would allow them trees that time.

I agree it is a good thing to see and I hope that more publishers follow this example. There is no reason why they cannot use recycled paper for books and with how many will be published it makes sense.

that's a great idea:) with all the books that get purchased, and then sometimes thrown away later, maybe they should make it mandatory across the board. kills me how many trees might have been wasted just on the junk mail i get alone.

That would work for me, to at least you paper that is partially recycled would make sense. Maybe not use 100 percent recycled paper on everything but at least fifty percent that would be a start. Yeah I know what you mean on the junk mail that wastes so much paper. Burns me as well.

I hope that such a move will inspire others to follow. We really need companies to follow the environmental bandwagon. But what will be better is if they put a label somewhere prominent in the book that it is of recycled material. This will at least instill some awareness to all the young readers of Harry Potter that not only does the book entertain, but also worries for their future.

They might do that I don't know. It would be nice if they did so that more would be aware of it. If I hadn't of seen it in my neice's magazine I doubt I would have known about it. It was in an article about what does Avril Lavigne and Harry Potter have in common, both work with recycling.

I think that's great!!! Seeing as the books r so long it makes sense to just used recycled paper instead of cutting down trees that could b used for sumthing else.

I wish we can recycle everything…and save our planet…when I was small, everybody in school should bring recycle newspapers to school, so school could sell it for profit…I wish we teach kids to do it…I can see too many pares in regular garbage…

I agree. Problem came in a few years ago not enough places for recycling the newspapers. They actually were years behind in doing it so places stopped recycling them. I think now it needs to be pushed more then ever.

If they would printed out this book in recycled paper much better . It is really needed that we must save our enviroment and cutting trees would just create more problems with our environment today. Since a lot of people would buy this book it is much better really if they would print it out in recycled paper to help save our enviroment.
