Garage Sales - Unbelievable!

I'm having a garage sale this weekend, I made $15 today, and hopefully a few more tomorrow.
What I think is unbelievable, however, is that the city I live in charges an $18 fee to hold a garage sale! I think that's ludicrous, the last time I had a sale was almost 2 years ago and I think I only made $60 the entire weekend! The $18 gets you nothing either.. no signage, no advertising and certainly no help!
Don't tell anyone, but I didn't apply for a permit this weekend. I figure I'll be lucky to walk away with $50 after it's all said and done and there's no way this city will walk away with their cut off the profits of my possessions.
The city says they implemented it to prevent people from running garage sales like businesses and holding them every weekend, but really why couldn't they just make you apply for a permit and implement a limit of 3 per year or something?
Isn't that the stupidest thing you ever heard of?

That's pretty lame. I live in a small town and you don't have to get a permit to have a garage sale.
I wish you the best of luck with your sale.

That is really stupid! I can't believe they charge you that much! I wouldn't be willing to pay it lol. Well only if I had items that I thought I would make a lot of money off of. Otherwise, no way.

I've heard of places doing that. You are right unless it's a rummage that's non-stop then yeah maybe. But just someone getting rid of their unwanted stuff for some pocket money say at the end of particular seasons shouldn't be an issue. We have someone up the way who does it all spring-fall always signs up that say "huge rumage" and they are distinctive. This has been going on for atleast the 13yrs I've lived this way. We stopped once and were not impressed.
