I'm trying to save some money by cooking at home more, and I've heard that rice is really cheap to cook. I have tasted some delicious rice in my time, but I don't seem to have the knack for cooking it. ...so I know I'm missing something. Any help would be very much appreciated. Should I use a chicken stock as my boil water. What about adding vegetables to the cook water? What's your best tip for cooking from scratch dishes that involve rice? (PS if you use secret herbs and spices, please let me know, I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow and will add them to my list:)

One fool proof way is to buy those boil-in-a-bag rice. Just follow the instructions and you'll get great rice. No, you don't need to use stock..just use regular water. To start off with, just cook the rice by itself so you can master that first before trying other recipes. You can cook your meats and vegetables separately and eat it with the rice.

Thank you for the wonderful time saving idea. I think that boil in a bag rice would probably be the more foolproof way to cook. :) I'll try to include it on my shopping list.

It really is. I cook rice almost everyday. I've used rice cookers, boiling it in a pot, making casseroles, etc. Easiest I've found so far are the bag ones.

I'd love to try rice in a casserole. Sometimes I find plain rice to be kind of boring. Do you have a rice casserole dish that you could share with me? I think I could probably even get my little kid to try that out!

The main tips I have are to use 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice. Bring it to a boil then lower heat and cover for about 20 minutes. If you have one, use a glass lid, but don't lift the lid until done. As for the liquid, any broth, beef, chicken, or veggie, can be used, I have even used tea as the liquid for it. One other tip if you are going to cook rice regularly, get a rice cooker, it has a timer and will keep from over cooking while being able to keep it warm. You can find them in various sizes and prices.

What a fascninating bit of trivia. I had no idea that other countries used rice in such a way. Personally I have noticed that I have more energy when I eat rice and it also helps me control cravings for sweets. Thank you for taking the time to post. Much appreciated. And, to brothertuck, thank you for all your wonderful suggestions. Especially the broth idea. Do you think that I could substitute a can of chicken vegetable soup (like Campbells chicken vegetable, the kind with soupy broth) instead of just plain broth. And, perhaps add enough water to make up the difference in your recipe? That's what I have in the cabinet right now. Would that do as well?

brothertuck cooks like me. way to go brothertuck. i would dare offer this be the best and simplest way to cook rice. rice...yum yum. rice is such an energy boost i actually look for a restaurant opened early to eat rice before a round of golf. it keeps my energy up through the 18th hole. believe it or not, some country (name withheld to avoid bickering) limits what their foreign workers can work as. rice eaters get the field work where energy is crucial. those from countries peas as a staple diet, usually gets lower paying less energy requirement work like factories. imagine that. before they start doing that, production in both areas was low. put rice eaters in factory they keep taking break to "stretch their leg" as they are unable to channel all that energy anyway but stand next to machines. non-rice-eaters on the other hand working in field jobs tire too easily.

I always use chicken stock to cook my rice, even for the boil-in-a-bag type. I'm sure the others mentioned work just as well. I personally wouldn't do rice and vegetables together. I'm not so good with timing so I'd probably end up with overdone rice and half cooked vegetables. You could always steam the veggies first and add the liquid into your boil liquid for the rice. You can add whatever herbs and spices fit the dish you're making. Some will call for nothing more than a dash of plain table salt. Others maybe some garlic. Butter is a good thing to add too. I've read enough bad things about margarine that I'm trying to switch over to real butter. It's usually more expensive per pound but you don't need as much to get a good flavor. Making rice is the simplest thing one can do to eat. you just need one part of rice and 2 parts of water. you can use vegetable broth or chicken broth insted of water. it is more healthy nad taste very good. if you wanna add some veggies in it and you are not an expert , you can add them afterwards also, otherwise if you over cook the rice it will not look nice nor will you like eating them. so when you are boiling rice you can boil veggies also on one side. you can squeeze one full lemon when the rice is half way done, i mean it is fifty percent cooked. while boiling you can add crushed garlic , fresh herbs, spices and all to make it taste good.

Many excellent tips above, I only have two things to add: Consider brown rice, it's supposed to be better beacause it is less processed than white rice. It takes longer to cook, twice as long as white rice, but is a little more forgiving of mistakes; Never, never, never stir white rice while it is cooking, guess if you follow the don't lift the lid tip, this one won't be an issue. The only other thing that wasn't mentioned above, is cooking until the water is all gone. Time the cooking, then use a butterknife to part the rice and look down to the bottom to see if its dry. That's how my mom showed me to do it, and my rice usaully comes out OK.

You have some fantastic tips. And, I'll use them all. I'm a health nut, lately. And, trying to lose weight. That's one of the reasons that I want to eat more rice. I'll put brown rice on my grocery list. I made rice last week and broke the rule about lifting the lid and stirring and it ended up all gummy. I was wondering what had caused that. I've always looked to cook, but rice has never been my easiest dish. All these tips will help. Thanks again for taking the time to post!

The easiest way to cook rice is to put a spoon full of oil into a pot, add one cup of rice, one teaspoon of salt and two cups of water. Bring to a boil and then simmer until the water is gone. If you want to you can add spice like curry or tomatoe paste after cooking. It is really as easy as pie.

beautyqueen26 You are getting a lot of good advice for cooking rice here. But if you will get your herbs at a health food store they are cheaper there in bulk. Call around to find one because not all health food store carry bulk herbs. We have one here and I can so many more herbs in bulk for a lot less money. you might pay $3.oo for some sage at the grocery stor and get the same amount at the health food store for maybe 50 cents as an example. I cook some rice with some instant chicken broth ans may be some chicken seasoning of some kind then add frozen or canned spanich and some green onions. very good. took this to a church poyluck and it went over very good. You may have to play with the seasoning some.

its very easy to cook rice.get a pressure cooker,put water in the container inside,put washed rice in it,seal the cooker and place it on gas.wait till the whistle blows.there you have your rice cooked.

As boil in the bag rice is a little more expensive than the old fashioned stuff here is the way I cook traditional rice. Put the amount of rice you want to cook into a pan and cover with water, for at least 6 hours, the longer the better. Before cooking, drain the rice and replace the water, cover and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, reduce th heat and simmer until the water is gone, checking occasionally. And I also stir occasionally, to aviod sticking, the less you fool with it however the better. Once fully cooked fluff with a fork and enjoy with whatever seasonings you like.

If you have some leftover rice from a previous meal, you can turn it into fried rice. In a frying pan cook some garlic and onion. Add some chopped-up leftover hotdogs or ham or bacon. You can also add scrambled eggs. Add the leftover rice. Mix them up and you've got fried rice. For extra taste I like to add a little soy sauce and butter.

Hi beautyqueen. I'm not an expert in cooking rice but I will tell you the way I do it and it's not too bad. I actually like it. The best rice that I like and I think is easy to cook is Basmalti rice. But you can use other kinds of rice too. I put some butter in a pan and melt it on a low heat on the stove. Then I take a cup of rice and I wash it with hot water, I like to get that white stuff off. Then I drain the water and add the rice to the pan where I have the butter. I fry it a little bit and then I add water and let it boil on high temperature. I usually cover the rice up with water, the water should be above the rice like half a finger (1 inch maybe?). You can of course as you said add chicken broth to give it more taste and also other spices like salt, pepper or oregano... You let it boil and when the rice has absorbed all the water, you put the heat down to low and you cover the pan. Let it cook for around 10 minutes. It should be done by then, but if is not cooked yet then you just cover it again and continue to cook for few minutes. Good luck!

Ok, there are so many ways of preparing rice! I can tell you a few really easy ones, and then the rest is up to you. First, you can just add soup broth (in Argentina you can buy it dry in cubes, I don't know in your country...) to the boiling water. It doesn't make miracles, but it tastes a lot better. Another option, is to fry some onion, then add the rice, and then the water. You can do both at the same time, first fry onions, and then add rice, and then add the broth. Finally, once the rice is cooked, you can eat it with melted cheese in it, or a fried egg on top of it, or with tomato sauce... hope it helps!

just water and rice will do it.. but the water component must be appropriate say an inch higher than the rice! then hit the stoves and then done! that's all u need to do!

I use a rice cooker but if you don't have one, it's very easy. Use a good thick pot (preferably a teflon-coated pot) with cover. First you need to wash the rice then drain. Then put water equivalent to 1-1/2 of the rice you are cooking. If say you are cooking 1 cup of rice, put 1-1/2 cups of water. When it boils, stir the rice then adjust your flame to the minimum until it cooks. You can make fried rice too. Just chop up and saute garlic and onions, add whatever you have available -- ham, chicken, bacon, (even leftovers), (chopped them) shrimps, canned sweet corn & peas or chopped carrots and mix them all together with the rice. Season with salt and/or soy sauce. You can also add scrambled eggs cut in strips.

We eat a lot of rice at my house as I grew up eating rice with almost every meal. So I cook rice alot. We eat a lot of Mexican style foods so rice is a staple. Here are a few ways I cook my rice. The start is always the same. 1. Put a couple of teaspoons of oil in the bottom of the pan. 2. Pour however much rice you are cooking into the pan (1 cup for this example) 3. Over medium heat, toast your rice in the oil for a few minutes, it will start to look chalky and slightly golden 4. Add your water or stock to the rice (we used 1 cup of rice, so we need 2 cups of liquid) 5. Bring your water to a boil. Once boiling, I will add any spices or veggies to the rice. 6. Bring your heat down to low and allow the rice to simmer, covered for 15 minutes. 7. Remove your rice from the heat. While covered allow to sit for 5 minutes. (I always take mine off the hot burner and place it one a cool burner) 8. Uncover, fluff with a fork and serve. I have used chicken stock, beef stock, water, veggie stock as my liquid. I have even used the drippings from a roast added to water as my liquid. I also add whatever veggies I like to my rice too. As for spices, I use whatever I feel like. If I am cooking Mexican I will use Knorr Tomato with Chicken Bullion. I have also just tossed in Cajun seasoning or whatever is on hand. I have also added pre-cooked chicken strips or meatballs that have been chopped to my rice too. If I am feeling really lazy, I will add mac and cheese sauce packets (not the pasta, just the cheese sauce packet) milk and pre-cooked, crumbled ground beef. One pot meals with rice. You can also make all those Minute Rice recipes with regular rice, if you cook your rice first and then prepare the recipes. I also make up a pot of plain white rice (no seasonings what so ever, using plain water) every few days and make fake cream soups with it or rice pudding.
