Ok. I'm watching this show on TV and this guy has a big parrot and its name is Rex Murphy. I used to have hamsters named Robert and Elizabeth Barret Browning. We had a Bassett Hound named Lady Morgan of Lenox. We called her Morgan for short. Purebred animals often have "registered" fancy names, especially dogs, horses, and cats.
Do you have pets with unusual or "people-type" names? I think its wonderful when people stray from Fido and Fluffy and Tiger or any other "normal" pet names. A friend of mine had this HUGE male dalmatian she called Walter. How awesome is that? I have heard of a dachshund name Bentley. It just seems right, somehow. The ultimate was the Bassett Hound on the Dukes of Hazzard named Flash. He never moved much, and he was such an awesome picture of laziness. Flash was so ironically perfect. It is said that during tapings and of course over the years, Flash was played by a number of dogs, including one stuffed one.

I had an Irish Setter who had the Scottish name of McGregor from the name "Rob Roy McGregor" who was a famous Scottish red head.

A Rob Roy cocktail is made the same as the American Manhatten except it is sweet vermouth mixed with scotch instead of bourbon

Don't you agree, whiteheather, that this discussion is one of the most delightful that has been posted lately?

I believe we think alike, kbkbooks. I never saw the need to name our pets typical pet names either. My kids once had a dog that we named for one of their favorite characters off of a tv show. His name was Ray Ellis and he was loads of fun. They also had a German Shepherd named Mr. Belvedere (from the tv show). It pays to use your imagination!

ROFLMAO at Mr. Belvedere, but personality-wise I bet it fit.
I just realized I never told you my present dog's name is Maxxx, with three x's because he is a really bad boy, naughty not vicious; he knows what we expect of him but just lets us know he has no intention of doing it. However he is just too loving to be too concerned about it all. I have walked him through all the same training steps of other dogs I have had over the years. It just doesn't TAKE. One of our cats is named Skoooter (yes with 3 o's) because as a baby home from the pet store he literally ran all over our house and yard so fast we could never catch him until he treed himself and couldn't get down. He still likes trees, but he knows how to get down now, and he still runs fast.

You and I must have made our comments at the exact same time so I did not see yours when I made my comment so I added some trivia to it.

My nephew had a dachshund named Fred, and a friend named her cat Emily, but I don't think I've ever used a human name for an animal. Some of my cats names have been: Fiddle Face, Two Toes (2 toes were orange), Speedo, Mercury and Quicksilver (sisters), Sport, 3 O'Clock, Hairy, Zinc, Simba, and Capt. Midnight.

3 O'Clock was a female multi-color kitty, the marks on her face were gray-black and orange and spotty/streaked -- all except a solid orange area that covered the upper right "corner". The solid area went right down the center of her nose to the middle of her nose and face, and then made a 90 degree angle off to the right. It looked just like a clock that was showing a time lapse of three hours, or was showing the time as 3 O'Clock. She was a real sweetie and the daughter of Mercury (as was Speedo, Two-Toes, and Shady is the lone male of the litter). I still have Mercury and Shady, who are approaching 13 and 12 years old.

My cat is actually called Pepsi, which is unusual becuase it's also the name of a famous brand of cola (which i'm sure you all know! We didn't actually name her ourselves, the children of the people who gave us the cat (long story involving them splitting up and not being able to keep her) named her, i assume after the drink. Since it's her name we just kept it.

My aunt about 40 years ago had a black and white female cat named Pepsi. She had literally dozens of cats over the years, sometimes many at a time, but all well loved and cared for and unbothersome to her neighbors. At one time she has up to almost 30 cats at a time that I remember, maybe more at other times. Plus she had dogs and a bird and probably a few gold fish over the years. They all got on well. Another one of her cats was named Fresca (also a drink but bottled by CocaCola...haha. She had one dog named David (my husband's name now) and another just named Puppy Dog.

My cat is named Onye, pronounced On-YA, my dog's name is Summer, my fish are Dexter and Baxter and in the past I've had dogs named Tiara, Reba, Nula and Lincoln.
I think that as long as it's not too generic, hard to pronounce or (at least with dogs) too similar to a command (Brown, Lay Down.. see how that might be confusing?) you could name an animal almost anything within reason.

It's hard for a dog to change names after a long time having a different name. I'm glad for her that you kept it. At the shelters here, some of the animals that stay there a while I guess or the ones that get brought in by people for a specific reason: those pets already have names. But most of the strays they pick up are nameless, waiting, but they are all waiting to be adopted and loved regardless of their names.

I have a cat named Reagan after President Ronald Reagan. I have another cat named Barry after Senator Barry Goldwater. I have a dog named Whielhem after Keiser Whielhem the Second the last German emperor. Whielhem is a german water dog. So the name seemed fitting. I have another cat named Rudy named after the famous Notre Dame football player Rudy Ruettiger. It seemed like both of them were similar. My cat is very small for its breed but is willing to take on bigger cats all the time.

Lots of cute names for animals in this discussion! I really like Lady Morgan, that's pretty. I also really like Bently. I think it is fine to name animals with people names. A name is a name, and an animal can be named anything! Although I do think I might have a small problem with people being given animal names. :)
