pre-teen vandalism

I have not been able to post on myLot for the past few days because of medical tests I had to undergo (again!) so I was unable to vent my disgust and frustration over this incident I will relate now. Last Sunday, I had just got home at around 7 pm when I received a call from a civic-minded person, that a pack of around 8 kids, probably aged 10--the oldest could not have been more than thirteen--using one of the directional signboards for the sales centre I was manning as skateboard ramps! I live about an hour and a half away and after being at the centre for 8 hours, I was in no shape to drive all the way back. She told me that she took pictures of the kids while they were doing their thing, and they were so brazen they even posed! According to her, the sign was totally shredded, and sure enough, we lost one sign, conspicuously absent from the corner leading to our location. I cannot understand how some kids of that age are allowed to be out so late (this was at 9:00 pm) and are so cavalier with other people's property! Am I the only one who has experienced such a violation of my property? How about you fellow myLotters--have you ever had your property vandalized and you felt powerless to prevent it? How did you react? What did you do? What would you suggest should be done to avoid such behaviour among our children?

I'm sorry you went through that. It seems like some parents are so caught up in their own lives they are depending on others to watch their children. Hopefully the pictures will help you (or the police) to identify the culprits?

Unfortunately, the "perps" are too young to be hauled in. The pictures were really too blurred to be of much help, and it was at night, so... I am just so glad that there was a Good Samaritan who bothered to call me to let me know what was happening. Thank God that there are still people like that who care enough...

Vandilism comes in spurts around here but typically it would be a slightly older group of teenagers, and generally there is drink involved. We have had mostly minor damage, but one time our front window of the car was smashed which was expensive and prettymucha huge waste of a Saturday. We've also had garden items vandalised, like shrubs uprooted and pots knocked over. I think nine times out of ten hey are drunk, and I think if caught they, AND their parents, who find it convenient to allow them out roaming at all hours, should be punished.

I am sorry this happened to you Seagoddess
But again it boils down to the Parents I am afraid
Like you say what are Children at that age still doing outside, mine had to be in by 7.30pm in the Summer and when it was winter and getting dark early they either had to be in our House by 6pm or if they where at a Friends house to let me know and I would pick them up at 8 as I never liked both of my Kids out in the Dark
The only time they where out later then that is if we where playing Badminton or something like that which meant I was with them or if they where with their Friends where I could see them

Hey, darling Gabs! How are you feeling? Better and better I hope...Anyway: you are absolutely right the parents have a lot to answer for when they have kids running wild without supervision, and when the kids do deliberate acts of vandalism. Complete disregard for other people's property seems to more rampant now. Parents just don't seem to care. Well, I like your avatar--reminds me of a hummingbird! {{{HUGS}}}
