What is so great about NASCAR?

Why are people so hooked on NASCAR? Is it the speed? No as the NHRA cars do over 300 mph. Is it for fast cars going in circles? No as IRL do over 200 mph. NASCAR does less than 200 mph. Is it because it's American... Cars and drivers... Well this year that changed with Toyota & Juan Montoya. So if it is only popular because it is America, will that now change?

For the most part, it is the personality of the drivers, and the wrecks, that get to me. Also my favorite driver, i got to meet him one on one at a friend of his uncles house and he is what got me watching the races, he was so sweet and likeable, and I like to keep up with what is going on in his life.

I think getting the fans to pick a driver is a good marketing ploy. I think it is like wrestling. They promote people as the good guys and the bad guys.

I think it's the personalities. Nascar has always had guys who were great for tv and brough attention to them. The King, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and the Allison brothers rivalry, Dale Earnhart, so many others from the past. Today there is Dale Jr, teammates Jeff Gordan and Jimmy Johnson, Tony Stewart. All of the good ol boys like Mark Martin. The young and internation drivers joining in (to most old time southern Nascar Fans, Las Vegas and California are internation ... hehehe). The bumper to bumper racing at high speeds, the excitement, the accidents. There are so many reasons. I am a race fan, not like my brother who is a true fanatic, but I enjoy a good event, whether drag racing, or IRL, or formula one. I love local dirt track and modified racing. But Nascar just has something that draws me to it.

Is it just personalities? IRL, NHRA and the other motor sports all have drivers with personality. I think they used Americana to start with and now are riding on that using good PR to keep the wave going.

I used to watch USAC when AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti were there, there still are personalities like Mario's grandson, Marco, and Danica Patrick, and in Formula are many as in drag racing. I am just answering what you ask in my opinion. It's so much more then just cars, it is the drivers, and the owners, and the pit crew and pit chiefs. I enjoyed CanAm racing years ago when MacLerin was a leading driver in his white car with the 5 foot raised wing. He was a personality, as are so many in the racing game. Without personalities, many in Nascar being American, there is nothing to bring peole in. In football which is a team sport more then many, it is the personalities, the players, the team's personality (eg the Raiders and the Cowboys are major examples). Even in the movie Rollerball where the team was made to overshadow the individual, the individual, Jonathon, came through and gave the people someone to cheer for. It is psychologically shown that people need to identify with someone and not be just part of the bigger whole. Not just be a number. Nascar is full of personalities. People are drawn to personalities. When IRL broke away from USAC the league and the race became the personality rather then the individuals. But as I say that is just my opinion and though others may see it in other ways but it is how I see it. I have a question for you, what is wrong with Americana??? Why are you refuting the response that disagree with your opinion??? You ask a question and then question the answers. Do you not like Nascar???
