Education, the sort we get in schools, colleges and universities, is it good for us as individuals or is it driven simply by what a society wants at any given time?

I think it's true that education is driven by the needs of a country's economy. I have noticed that in our local uni. adult courses for IT are extremely expensive, where courses in literature and arts are much cheaper. For instance, the last series of courses I did was for creative writing which was £75 for 10 weekly courses of 2 hours each, which I enrolled for and enjoyed for several years. I fancied then learning more about the way my computer worked, that was one morning course of about 4 hours for double the price. I didn't bother and spent the money on books instead. I would say that IT is useful, but creative arts are more than that. We can truly grow. The shame of this is, that if society was more balanced and through work we could become more spiritual people, it would benefit. Take Japan for instance, before working there is meditation and various other displines like honour - a floor sweeper is as honorable as a technician. Tokyo although being one of the most densely populated cities on earth, is also one of the safest where women can walk alone at night. Yet it is a powerful economic global force today.

clearly there are determining factors outside of the needs of the student, but these are obscured from us. I mean, in the uk it is not that long ago it was illegal for anyone outside of the formal hierachy of the church to be able to read, i just wonder if we are not still doing the same thing but in other ways blessed be

Right, I see where you are coming from now. Quite possibly. A friend of mine is very suspicious of everything going on in education, so much so that she teaches her own granddaughter at home now. She is a qualified teacher and has found a legal way of doing this, but I feel there is something missing for the child in that. But there again, our life tends to find a balance in these things anyway, we always seem to get what we need in our life - maybe not necessarily what we want.

i know a saying ... "i was born inteligent, education ruined me" ... education has its good and bad parts. but still... you need it. otherwise, the world would go mad. but it creeps me out the fact that i need to study things i don't care about and don't need in the future just to pass my examns and graduade...

Yes I do this that the basic we get is good for us as a whole. As individuals you can then take it further to what ever levels you choose.

Hello, eskarena, some people may not have good education but they are very nice people while other people may be well educated but do not even know how to respect people. I think education should have taught us something more than the book knowledge, for example,we may learn how to comminicate with other people well and respect other people. At the same time, education has labelled people according to their education level, the ones who have better qualification gain more respect than the other, some people may not want to learn something in education but to get a certificate to 'prove' themselves in the society.

this is true, there is certainly a lot to learn that is not taught in school. I do worry over which things are taught in school and why some things are chosen over others blessed be

There is a need for basic education to be a civilised citizen. Only through education can we come out of the vicious cycle of poverty. A man of knowledge can survive anywhere in the world. Society today look upon education as a necessity and a tool to unplift their social economy.

I think education is good for us as it lets us know many things which if not educated may not know.It gives us a way in life.We understand many things. If not educated how could we have made contacts with so many people. But yes sometimes what we are taught hardly is useful in practical life.

for sure, we are better off being educated, i just worry about where this education goes and what things we are taught. It just seems we have little control over what we are taught and that some knowledge is valued more than some other things. Why is this. For example, a guy who can work out the odds in a book keepers office or the price of a round of drinks in his head, is not rewarded as much as someone who can work out the price of commodoties in the stock market, when the skills required are exactly the same? blessed be

I think having an education is essential for what you need to survive in life; You have to know as to how to count, read etc to make it or folks will play you; Case in point, I have a neighbor, who is a talented painter. Quite talented, but otherwise, he is not highly educated because he got like $2Gs for a job, and he took it to a club/bar and spent the WHOLE amount there on drinks for everyone there. He has to have some man around to help him, more like taking him to the cleaners big time if u ask me. but you get my drift.

Education is good for us as it teaches you some basics in life which you hav to follow all your life. More over knowledge is gained by education but some great men are not for normal education, they all create their own education not the schools or colleges teaches them, but they all only a few of them. All others need education.

i disagree. the healthy basics i have from my mom and granny. school only taught me that money can solve anything, that if you cheat you have better chances than if you try hard to study... but then again, i live in romania, the most strange and unnormal country. maybe somewhere else is better.

I believe in the value of public education. It is true that it is driven by what society wants to a large extent, but it also teaches young people about life...and how to succeed in it. It provides good teachers (and most are good) as models that young people can emulate. Often in societies with high illiteracy rates, you see a corresponding increase in crime. Education shows our young people the possibilities of life, and gives them the skills they will require to grab onto those possibilities. cheers,
