My son saved a bird!!!

I told my children that they could go outside to play in the back yard before it started to rain for the day. They were outside riding their bikes when my 5 year old son saw something. He came running inside screaming" mommy, mommy, a baby bird is on the ground and it can't fly." I went outside to see what he was talking about. There on the ground below one of our tallest trees sat a baby bird. It was offering to flying or make any kind of noise. I got closer to see if it was alive or just maybe hurt. It started hopping around. My children knew that we couldn't leave the baby bird where it was because we have a one year old german shepard who has been trying to catch birds. My son grabbed a stick to hand it to me. I used the stick to palce the bird as far up in the tree as I could reach. I wanted to make sure that our dog wouldn't be able to reach it. I am so proud of my little boy. He knew what kind of danger that baby bird was in and he got the poor thing some help. Has one of your children ever done something like this?

Awe that was so sweet of your son to realize the bird needed help . I can't think of a time that any of my children have done this yet but we have taken in so many stary animals over the years that I would hope they would do the same . I can't bear to see an animal suffering of any kind and would do all I could and although my children haven't come across any animals as of yet to help out , I am sure they would if they did but three of my children are much older then your little guy so that is what makes it all that much cuter . Someone who shows caring for an animal is someone who will grow to think about others :)

I agree its cute because of his age. I am hoping that he doesn't become like those teenagers you hear about who are cruel to the poor little animals. Heard about one on the new last night. They had a video tape of these boys doing it. They boys wanted a atrophy to show the rest of their friends.

My sons were always the type to bring home any kind of stray animal they saw that they thought needed help. At one point I had over ten cats because of this behavior. I never told the boys to stop though. I would keep the animals until I was able to find them another home. Its sweet that your children care enough to want to help the bird out.

Luckily for us people don't just dump their unwanted animals around us. I probrally have a house full of animals then. I remember bring home all the strays I found.

Oh, isn't it a wonderful feeling to know the kids have compassion for animals, as well as humans. Children seem to especially care about animals. Mine were the same and so are my grandchildren. My son brought home a blackbird once. One of his wings was broken, or something was wrong with it. We kept it in a warm box and my boys went out collecting worms and grubs to keep it fed and eventually, it flew. I think it gives you a real sense of satisfaction to have saved a bird. :-)

Aww, That is so sweet. The children have asked if we can feed the bird if its mommy doesn't come back. I told them that we could but we will have to get some worms. They are now trying to dig up some worms.

That's so nice. It's always great that kids today value even the life of animals. If it were some other kid who wasn't raised right, they would probably have fun poking and torturing the little thing. I know, it's sick but there are kids like that here.

I think that one of the reasons the children value the life of animals is because they watch Animal Planet. They watch the shows where the ASPCA save animals from abusive situations. Also I take them over to the local animal shelter so that they are able to see first hand how they can help.

How lovely a little boy.your story reminds me some momery of childhood. At that time,I could see little birds anywhere and even could play with them, they did't afraid of the human at all.But now it is rare to see the little creatures and most of thme will keep away from the people, because they fear to be hurted.sometimes I just wonder why some people can't be more friendly and kind.

I know what you are saying. I often wonder why there are some people who are so cruel to these poor innocent creatures.

We took a picture of the baby bird and made him a little plaque honoring him for being such a good samaritan. He was so happy he asked if he could take it to school to show everyone.

saving a life and caring are basic human instincts.yes, i have seen a lot of kids cry when a pet is hurt, they feel for the under dog.we as adults have turned off that radar for our survival unlike kids who are so naive about the world.i thought you were to take the bird inside the house ,buy a bird cage and take care of the bird until it can fly on its own.

I didn't want to teach the children that they should remove an animal from its natural habitat so I returned the bird to its tree. Luckily I did so because my children were able to see the mother bird fly down to get the baby bird. Since I never touched the bird with my hands the mother bird was able to accept the baby bird back into its nest.

thats a true good samaritan job!!!! i congratulate your son to have saved a life. howsoever small a life it might be, every life must be treated equally important. i believe that the good and bad behaviour of a child are inherited from the parents and no one else. hence i congratulate you too for inculcating good moral values in your son. i am sure that your son would grow into a very responsible and respected citizen. i wish him all the best.

thats fantastic! it sounds like you've raised a compassionate little boy there, and not the kind that wants to shoot the birds instead..and that is something to be proud of for sure! my 12yrd old girl has "saved" (lol) lizards, baby birds, a toad that was perfectly happy where he was(the lizards were too im sure), and a puppy that mysteriously managed to get in the yard from a house or 2 down the street lol!

I am so happy we don't have lizards here!! My daughter has tried to save a neighbors dog before. The neighbors dog is an outside pet and my daughter hates that. It sounds like you have raised a compassionate child as well. Congratulations.

You must have thought your son well. I am sure you are very proud of him. Some kids would just play with the bird and harm it and some, like your son, knows the difference between good and bad and have taken the right steps to save the bird. Bravo!
