I went to the store today, just to buy a few stuff, gave the cashier my debitcard and after a while she said - I am sorry, but it is denied... This can not be possible I said - please try again... She did and with the same result. I was so embarrassed.. returned the items and stepped out.. Immidiately called my bank and was shocked. the balance was $0.0 I know that i am a big spender, but i also know that i got paid friday and that there is nooooo way i could have spent that amount AND the rest on the account. I called to get a statement and the statement said that I had spent every cent on a resturant that i had been too during the weekend. I know that I was there but i also know that all we had was dinner. Next step, I went to the resturant - furious I might add. I demanded to talk to the manager and after half an hour i was shown to his room. ' I explained it to him and he sighed and said that I was not the first one today. Obviously there had been some problems with the banks machines for an hour so instead of charging normal they emptied the accounts.. He said that he has been in touch with the bank and that we all will get our money back but it will take 3-10 buisness days. This is bad - I have millions of bills to pay and rent and also need money for my daily life.. however I could not be mad at him - it was not his fault and he really seemed upset.. He also gave me a gift voucher (for dining at the resturant) of $150 and we would also not be charged for the meal during the weekend. I had to call all the companies and explain this to them as well - but they were all understanding and agreed to wait a few more days for the money. have you ever had anything liek this happen to you? How did it happen and did u get it all back?

Never- and I'd be furious! There must be something you can do- I can't believe all the companies and the landlord were ok with- I'll pay you in a few days when my money gets replaced- I hope this never happens to me- I cna honestly say that I wouldn't be going back there ever again- after the $150 voucher- They might mess it up again!

From what I have heard they are thinking about changing the machine they use to anothert brand. It was ot the resturant, it was the machine who had a meltdown for an hour. The companies here and the lamndlords are usually very nice when u have a good excuse for beeing late... =)

That is CRAZY, are you sure this guy is on the up and up, I would have called the authorities and made a report, this is robbery, he has stolen money from you that is not his and you did not sign for, he have a case, I would have called if it was me. Hope it turns out okay for you.

I have called the bank and they have together made a claim so there are more people involved in this. It was the banks machine that failed and not him. the thing I signed was for the right amount, but the machine emptied the account in all, didnt even leave 1 cent..

I do understand you. I will wait fr the days they told me it would take and give them a chanse to solve it. If they dont, I will press charges for sure - no doubt about that =)

I would think than you have a claim against the company that made the machine, just trying to think how you can be covered and the only way it seems is by pressing charges against the one that took your money illegally. Sorry too many years in the legal field have me apprehensive against people or companies that take money from us.

I didn't have anything like that happen at a restaurant but back in 1995 I accidently left my purse in a shopping cart while I was getting my two kids into the car in Huntsville, Alabama. We were on our way back home and I was going to stop to get us something to drink when I reached down and realized I didn't have my purse. I turned around and went back to the store in Huntsville but unfortunately I was too late. I saw the people who got the parking place behind me and I realized they had to be the ones who took my purse. But I went inside the store hoping that they would have been honest enough to turn it back in. But that had not happened. When I got back home about an hour later I had to call all my credit card companies and stop the accounts. Unfortunately this happened on a Saturday so I couldn't call my bank until Monday morning and had to get a brand new checking account. I also made the mistake of having my pin number to my ATM machine in my billfold, needless to say I have never done that again!! Thankfully all the person took from my account was $30 but that was bad enough. I had to go back to Huntsville the next day to pick up my mother and I called the police and filed a report with them. I was also on a local news TV channel and gave an interview of what had happened. To make a long story short, one of the ladies in that car used my ID card and drivers license to make a false ID and wrote over $2000 worth of bad checks in my name!! I was mad and humiliated. I got several letters from stores all over Huntsville, Alabama wanting their money. All I could do was send them a copy of the police report showing it wasn't me. The worst part of it all, one of the stores where the lady went called me and could identify the person but wasn't willing to hold her there until the police could arrive. To this day I don't understand that. I never got my purse back or any of the pictures in it. I would have been happy to just get back my pictures of my kids. When I called the police several times they finally told me they couldn't do anything to the woman because she didn't have a criminal record!! I said "Well if you would go arrest her now she would and maybe not let something like this happen again!!". I'm glad the restaurant owner gave you something for your trouble but I know it isn't the same as getting your money back.

But I will get all the money back as well, so I am fine. Loosing your purse, or even your wallet is horrible - I know. You kind of feeel violated coz u have your whole life in there.. Pictures, memories, cards and all other stuff. I would also be devestated.

Wow! I have also never heard of this happening, and I think that I might have called the police and asked what could be done. It does sound kind of fishy, they would have had a record of the accounts that had been messed up, and it seems like they should have contacted you themselves. I hope everything works out ok, but if you do not get the money back in your account, I would make sure to notify the authorities. Good luck!

i don't have a credit/debit card. i always pay in cash. yep. i am too old fashioned but i am okey with the way i pay things. hehe. as for you, sorry to hear about what had happened. it happened to my dad, too many times. whenever he received his bill payments for his credit card, there has always been lots of stuffs added which obviously he did not purchase. luckily, the bank always tries to look for where things might have been wrong and so, it has always been solved. but now, dad cancelled all his credit cards since he's too annoyed to go through those days when he need to get explanations from the bank and so on. and now, he's paying stuffs in cash, too just like me. hehe. computer errors happen all the time. and i hope this won't happen to you again.

Marie, how horrible that this happened to you and to others. I've never heard of it before. I know all about being double charged for something...I think most of us have had that happen, but to have our entire account wiped out???? Yikes! I was pleased to read that you will get your money back, got a free meal and a $150 voucher for another meal from the restaurant, even though it wasn't their fault. It's just a shame that you have to wait so long for the money to be put back into your account. That just doesn't seem right to me. "Someone" is getting the benefit of interest on that money, and it's NOT you. I'll be interested to hear the final version of what the bank says happened.

Oh my gosh that is terrible. I hope with everything in me, you will get it all back soon. My story isn't quite as drastic, but we had a similar experience once. We went to Sonic, and ordered dinner. Now mind you it is very rare we eat out, maybe once a month at most. So I remembered the total charge came to 18.20, cause when the lady came over the intercom a the drive thru, I grumbled I could have cooked three meals for that price. Well that night we came home and I did the checkbook. I got online with my bank and was shock to see we had significantly less of a balance than what I had calculated. I check under my current withdrawals and it appeared we had ordered, $182.00 of food at Sonics!!!! I hit the roof! I grabbed the receipt from the car and sure enough, our debit card was charged 182.00!! I drove right back up there, got the manager and showed him the receipt. Do you know he asked the clerks if they were sure I DIDN’T order that much!!!! I asked him how often someone comes in and order almost $200.00 worth of burgers??? End of the story, my account was credited with the full amount and we ended up with dinner on the house.

At the first place it is very scary I guess, when you know that you have no single peny in your account. Fortunately I have not gone through this kind of situation yet. I am glad that you have found the cause emmidiately and the manager was nice to handle the situation in a good way. I hope you get your money back soon.

WOW....now that would have been a shocker!I'm so glad this has never happend to me before....but my bf had problems with some employees at pizza hut before. He used his card to pay for a purchase and somehow they ended up making all kinds of charges on it.The really bad thing is that the card he uses can either be used as debit or credit and everything that they paid for came straight out of his checking account. It took the bank two weeks before he got his money back and he ended up having to open a new account....which of course the bank charged him for. At least in your case it was just a computer error and not a person doing it.I think it's just disgusting when people take advantage of others like that....not to mention all the trouble this causes for someone.

This never happened to me, But i guess if it did happen to me i probably would have freaked out. Lol. At least you got a free meal the next time you'll go to that restaurant, even though it is not really their fault. I would file a complaint to the credit card company, for what happend, and ask them to pay me in some way, for the damage that was done, and i do not mean, just the money that was missing.

This is outrageous! Did you check the receipt? Was the amount correct when you signed? If yes, how can such a thing happen? If more than a single case has been reported to the bank, the bank should have frozen the payment to the restaurant. You might want to change your bank if it is such a useless bum. Very sorry to hear this happen to you. Maybe in future it is better to separate your savings account from your expense account. If you know you will need 500 per month for expenditure only, put no more than that plus a little leeway into that card.

I've had some "errors" happen in the past, and it led me down the garden path of having multiple accounts, and NEVER paying with a debit card. A while back one of my credit cards was acquired by one of those online breaches you hear about from time to time. Someone the maxxed the card out on Ultima Online. I went to use it and got denied. Thankfully I already had a second card, so I used that to pay for dinner that night. Once I contacted the Credit Card company I ended up with a new card and the scammed charges removed. With debit cards you are so much more vulnerable, because it is actual cash not the credit line that is at stake. So someone can take all you cash and run and you have to wait to get everything back. I don't advocate large amounts of consumer debt. Unless its a very major purchase, I pay off my credit cards completely each month. What I do recommend is shielding yourself from harm. Also, with credit cards, if you are scammed, in most cases you are only liable for the first $50. (And in some cases that amount is even lower.) I love the extra protection layer and have had to invoke it from time to time. Good luck! I hope you get your money back soon!

My bank once took my home insurance out twice, which I got back within a few days, but nothing to that extent. Surely the bank has to be liable for the situation and should cover any forthcoming bills whether they arrive before the problem is corrected or after.

When I hear stories like this I am so glad that I do not use a debit bank card. My cousin had a problem with a 7 11 store charging her card twice. When she paid for her bill the woman said it did not go through and swipe your card again. This is when the charge went on twice. My cousin got her money back but it took a couple of days to fix the problem. It is a shame that it only take seconds to wipe out your account but days to put the money back. Watch your account and make sure that he does put the money back.

What an embarrassing situation! Good to be handled like this, your money will be backed to your debit card after few days. I'm sorry about what happened, marie. It can be frustrating to face a situation like that. Fortunately the manager was kind enough to offer you a gift voucher. I once use my credit card to purchase something. The saleslady then told me that it was denied. I was perplexed and confused as I knew I didn't use up all my credit limit yet. The saleslady suggested that I go to the customer service to check the problem. At the customer service area, they told me that I needed to wait for an hour . I was so upset and decided not to buy anything at all. At home, I called up my bank and told them my situation. As it turned out, the bank was down for some system cleaning. How annoying is that.

I have never had this happen. However, I had a problem one time with Dish Network taking over $1500.00 out of my account and they caused me to bounce several payments. I did complain to the bank about it and I did get some of my money back but never did get all of it. I think that Dish Network ripped me off and I would never do business with them again. It sounds as though in your case, it was a honest computer error and that the restuarant manager was very helpful in dealing with it and went out of this way to make it better.

I bought plane tickets on my credit card about amonth ago and the $900 odd came out of my account twice. I rang the bank.. the person I spoke to couldn't help me.. her manager couldn't help me.. no-one could help me until I supplied a letter from the airline saying that they over charged me.. which they wouldn't do b/c by their records they hadn't over charged me. The next day I rang the bank back in tears because I had no money to buy my baby nappies or food etc. I was so upset. The customer service person said "no worries" and refund my money on the spot! She said it was quite common for cedit card payments to go through twice! I guess it really depends on who you happen to get when you call the banks - not even the managers prove to be the best help in all cases.
