Smiles or gas?

My son is nearly two weeks old and he smiles a LOT. Everyone tells me it is just gas, but I´m really not so sure. He smiles in his sleep, of course, like all babies, but he also laughs in his sleep. And he smiles at certain people, mainly his big brother and his papa. What do you think? Can babies this age smile? I just keep thinking that if they come into the world with the ability to look very sad, with their mouths turned down, then why not be able to smile, too?

I think your baby can smile now I was reading an article and it said : A baby's first proper social smile generally occurs at about four to six weeks, though it may be seen earlier and dismissed as wind. Meaning many genuine smiles are dismissed as wind. You soak up all your baby smiles, that is the most precious thing in the world.

Thanks! Where did you read this? Most of the articles I´ve seen insist that babies can´t smile at this age. But how do they know? I was just tickling my son´s feet and he gave me a big grin, so I´m pretty sure that you are right and it was a genuine smile!

I have the same question too. My baby is already 1 month + old and he has been doing that smiles form time to time. Sometimes he would do it when he is awake and most of the times when he was sleeping. I wonder whether those were real smiles or just some reflex stuffs.

It seems to me that reflux and gas isn´t something to smile about! I wonder why people say that. I certainly don´t grin when I´m having tummy problems. lol.
