What's the history of a Labradoodle and why are they so popular now?

The Labradoodle is a result from breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Standard Poodle. This type of dog allows people who have mild allergy to own a dog since it sheds very little. I've read that Labradoodles ranked in the fifth place for their intelligent. The problem is the price, now that they becoming so popular, most breeders want thousand for one.
