I've dealt with insomnia most of my life, and I've tried just about everything except meds. What I found to work best for me, is to listen to a radio show, podcast, or music. This is best done with some sort of ear phones in order to block out all other noises. Then, just concentrate really hard on what is being said. What often keeps us awake at night is our thoughts and worries. This technique works by blocking out all those thoughts that keep you awake. It is a meditation in a way, you focus on what you are hearing, and as thoughts come into your head, you quickly release them and turn back to your focus.

well i have major sleep issues, so much so that i sleep apart from my hubby (that is one thing that helps!)...i have taken a natural herb that helps - its called melatonin...(go visit your local health food store, more pricey, but worth it!) another thing i do if i cannot sleep is read, but make sure its not an interesting book!! good luck :-)

When I can`t sleep - which is not very often - I get up, go to the fridge and cut myself a nice size chunk of hard cheese, put butter on it and eat it. Then I go back to bed and think of something pleasant, the blood from my brain goes to my stomach digesting and I can sleep like a baby. It works great for me every time.
