Backward castes in India are getting backward and backward again after every 5 year plans. The main reason being the political parties never want them to be forward. Politicians know that if they come forward their vote bank is depleted. The backward will start thinking because now they have a better life. The idea is to starve them so that they will only have time to think of their food and shelter and not of their fate.

The caste system in India is unique. I don't think in any other country there is such discrimination among people. I politely deffer with your view that politicians are solely responsible for the backwardness of the backward castes. Actually not every backward castes are socially backward now. Especially in few states like Kerala they are participating in all mainstream activities almost without any discrimination. However that is not the same in many other states. In many states ruthless discrimination still prevails. In some areas the forward caste people do not allow the backwards even to wear chappals. In Tamil Nadu, the Hindu has recently reported that in a village panchayat where the presidentship is reserved for schduled castes other members belonging to forward castes don't allow the president to sit on a chair when meeting of the panchayat committee is held. He has to sit on the floor. There are so many examples like that. The forward cast in such states are totally against accepting social equality. I think it will take a very long time to wipe out this dscrimination from the minds of the upper castes. Thank you andywish.

I agree.Any system that degrades humanity and clusters it into a "social group" is not good but rather, evil. I didn't even know this was going on today.
