Telephone Sales..

I can appreciate the hard job that telephone-sales people do. Telephoning one person after another trying to get them to buy insurance, or double-glazing. I do not like to waste people's time, so I registered with TPS (telephone preference service) here in the UK. That has worked fine up to last week. I have had 2 calls both claiming that I had "ticked a box" wishing to be contacted. Well I know that it absolute nonsense, because on or off line I always make a point of selecting "do not contact" especially by telephone. If I want something, I always go on line and do the appropriate search for best price and quality. It seems now as if these tele-sales companies are ignoring TPS, because both times I told them I had registered and both times they said it didn't count because I had asked for information. I said, "Why would I ask for information on double-glazing when my house is double-glazed throughout?" - "You obviously want to change it," came the answer. And the other caller grew agressive and started shouting down the phone that I didn't understand what a brilliant club he wanted me to join to get me wholesale prices for everything I wanted to buy. Talking very quickly, so as to ensure I couldn't get a word in edgeways. When I eventually found a slight silence, I just said, "I'm going to put the phone down now" and that was that. Please feel free to share your experiences.. Apparently, TPS can do nothing if companies violate requests of not to call certain telephone numbers.

Oooh this really is one of my pet hates at the moment. For a good 7 or 8 weeks I was getting blank answerphone messages on my phone every week day, apparently it was some company trying to make me take out a loan. I registered with TPS well over a year ago and I was furious that this blank call thing was going on. One day I worked from home and actually was at home when "they" called. Apparently it was an auto-dialler and if an answering machine picked up it cut off after a few moments but just left blank messages. When I got them on the phone I had to wait a few moments before someone picked up. I asked if they had been trying to contact me prior to that day and they said they had. They said they had a wonderful deal for me and kept calling me Mrs XXXXX when I told them 3 times during the call that I was Ms, my mum was Mrs and she lived somewhere else. I let him babble on for a while about this wonderful loan he was going to give me then started asking him stupid questions "I might think about it if it's 0% interest rate?" and "Do I have to actually pay the money back?" and "Can I borrow say £250,000 to emigrate to another country and not come back?" The chap was getting rather confused by my questions then I let rip and told him if he ever called again, I was going to personally go around to his office and chop his wotsits off and I hope the conversation was being recorded because I didn't need any finance or any loans or any more blank answerphone messages :) Ahhhh the satisfaction. Haven't received any calls like that again...! Not sure what the legality of them saying that TPS can't do anything, my number is ex-directory, I never give it out when filling in forms and if I have to provide a landline number I provide my work VOIP number which diverts to my mobile. These companies have random number generators so most of the time they don't even know who they're calling. So if that was the case, why was that guy calling me Mrs ????? Some muppet I know must have given my number out! When I get hold of them.... LOL

Thanks for the BR on this one. I thought I'd mention my colleague who has an evil sense of humour, he says he loves getting telesales calls as he has no mates so starts asking the caller what they do at the weekend and did they go to any good parties and what size shoes are they wearing and telling them he wore different coloured socks to work that day and do they want to be his "special friend", he said they rarely last up until he asks to be their "special friend!" LOL My other pal said she tells them she has to get something in the oven and just leaves the receiver on the side for however long she can be bothered. Once she said she went back after 20 minutes and the caller was still waiting, so she said she needed to check the oven again and came back 30 minutes later and they were gone at last!

Thanks for your response, you've given me a good laugh on this damp and dark day that supposed to be nearly June.. Emigrate and not come back... That's just brilliant - LOL

I do not feel obligated. I just hang up. It is my home and my life, and I owe them nothing.

Nicely put. We are not in this world to live up to anybody's expectations, and certainly not sales people. Thanks for posting :-)

i also hate telemarketers. when i was younger i had a job selling over the phone and it is one of the jobs i hated the most. In fact any phone job sucks... i used to work for a major phone company here in australia taking customers calls and it doesnt seem to matter if you are calling them or they are calling you wanting help- there is always an idiot or ten a day!

Thanks for posting. I wouldn't like to do a job with telephones either. It must be sooooo boring, hour after hour phoning people who really don't want to talk to you. They must go to bed each night with the word "no" ringing in their brains.

I've signed up for a DO NOT CALL list here in the US. Spam calls are not allowed to anyone on the list or the company could have to pay a heavy fine. Unfortunately, some places have managed to get themselves exempt from the rules. Charities in particular have gotten around it. If I get a call from someplace that I don't want to talk to, I tell them to take me off their list because I'm on the Do Not Call list. If they really get obnoxious, I just hang up. When I moved to my new place I also got an unlisted and unpublished phone number so that cuts way down on the calls too. I have Caller ID so I can have a record of the numbers that call, even if they don't leave a message on my machine.

Thanks for the reponse. Here in the UK having calling ID is only of limited help, because anyone can conceal their ID and companies do it constantly, and then it gets more confusing, because my sister's calls are automatically hidden because in her business she has to constantly ring people whom she does not want to disclose her number to, or she'll be forever answering call-backs, but at least she will leave a message on my answer-machine.

telephone sales really annoys me. why? because they keep on talking eventhough you are not interested of what they are offering. They are really discourteous and don't respect your opinion. Eventhough you have said no and i don't need it, they still insist on selling them.My God, don't they understand english and the two letter word NO! Wow! Makes my temper rise just the thought of thinking of it. anyway, goodluck!

I think telephone sales people have a language of their own, where no means that they can put more pressure on and if there are too many nos, they can become agressive. Thanks for posting.

Since we have caller id we don't always pick up the phone because we can tell that it is a telemarkter. Occasionally though we have to asnwer the phone because the number is blocked. This could be one of the childrens teachers or a bus driver. Now I admit I usually will just say a quick no thanks an hang up. But there are other times when I get so annoyed that I will just mess with the current telemarkter by asking them personal questions. Are you married? Do you like your job? How many children do you have? Do you currently like your mortage company? Usually I get told that they aren't allowed to answer personal questions. I then inform them that I am also not allowed to answer personal questions either and hang up.

Thanks for posting.. I like that reversal thing you do asking them personal questions. I would have to be in a good mood to do that, because if I'm in a bad mood, I would just tell them to B@*&* off..LOL

You are seeing one side of the coin. If you are busy person, if you are getting hundreds of unsolicited calls from sales personnel (telemarketing), you cannot be doing a nice talk. I just switch it off.

Thanks for posting. I don't like to be rude, and will answer calls because I need to for my business, but I always tell them before I put the phone down. It amazes me just how some sales callers will not take no for an answer though unless I shout it out. :-)

If I get stuck with a sales call like the ones you're describing, I let them say their first sentence, then said, "Can I stop you there, please?" If they stop, I tell them I'm not interested and I'm in the middle of my dinner, or some such reason. If they carry on, I say, "Ok, I'm putting the phone down now.. goodbye.", and I put the phone down, even if they ignore me. To my mind I've been polite and they haven't by ignoring my answer. So, down goes the phone!

Thanks for responding, you seem to treat unsolicited calls the same as I would. I have said things like "stop there" and it has been ignored, so then I have held the phone away from my ear slightly and say, I'm going to put the phone down.. And then down it goes.. If they want to be rude and not let me get a word in, what else can they expect? :-)

I really can't stand when this happens. It always seems to be when we are ready to sit down and have dinner or we are in the middle of some sort of crisis. What my husband does and it works every time, he asks them for there telephone number and says he will call them back. They get speechless and don't know what to say ....thats when he hangs up.

Good one that. I'll have to give that one a try next time. I did have one once which was quite funny. A voice said, "are you interested if we can beat your current insurance quote?" I said, "give me an example." They then said that they would get comprehensive insurance for £375 for a 1.6 ltr Vauxhall Astra and what did I think of that deal. I said, "I got a 2.0 ltr Focus sports and my insurance and I could beat that buy £100 - at £275" - which is true. Then the line did go all quiet and I just said "bye" and put the phone down. Thanks for posting.
