what is success?

some people are successful in their careers, rich, famous, etc, yet have dismal performances as fathers, mothers, brothers, friends, ...while some are dirt poor and yet are the happiest people in the world. success is a subjective thing, right? but why does the world put so much emphasis on the so-called measures of success that we have, like money, fame, recognition, as evidenced by the celebrity and money worship?

Well, I guess success is one of those words which can have a lot of definitions. For every individual, success can mean a different thing, just like happiness for every individual is different. In fact both those things are closely connected. Success is happiness and knowing that you have achieved that happiness. For some people that could mean being a good parent, for some having money and fame, and for some giving back something to the world. For me, success would be knowing that I have done everything I can to realize my dreams, whether I make it or fail. At least when I'm old I'll never wonder how different it would have been if I had tried.

i hear ya. knowing that your life is not full of what ifs will definitely make you feel that you have grabbed every opportunity, and life was not a waste. thanks for that response

I'm not positive, but I believe Elvis Presley was the one who said something like success is "Having Someone to Love, Having Something You Love to do and Having Friends and Family to Love."". I know that's not the exact quote, but I agree with it. As far as money goes, I believe you need enough to not have worry about paying your bills and some extra for fun!!

What you are saying is very much true. Some people can excel in some areas and fail in others. When we talk about someone who is successful, it is assumed that the person is successful in at least one area and is not a big failure in other areas. If this is not the case then we have to talk of success in an area that we must specify.

I believe that success is synonymous with money. With money comes popularity, recognition and the necessary comforts. A successful person do possess a lot of money. Only then will he be recognized by his fellowmen.
