Unusual children's names?

United States

I've noticed a trend towards more unusual names for children. I was just wondering what some of the more unusual you've heard are or have used? For me, my daughter's name is the most unusual I have heard. Her name is Nafeeza and it means "precious" in Arabic.

I know a little girl named Topanga. If you've ever seen Boy Meets World, she is a character on there. I know a little boy named Lunar, which I think is unusual, but also kind of cute. I know three girls name Aries, like the astrological sign, so I don't think that one is considered uncommon anymore. I don't generally like unusual names, but there are a select few I like.

I don't know necessarily that my son's name is that unusual. His name is Daemon Sean. it might be more in the spelling than anything! But, if we'd had a girl, her name would have been Annalise. Your daughters name is pretty, and it obviously means something special to you. don't ever let her forget that!!

Thank you. I won't let her forget. After her two older brothers I needed a precious girl. LOL. Her name really fits her too, but we get odd looks ffom folks when we tell them her name. Ah well, comes with the territory.

There's a trind here in Denmark there days that everyone is named with very old names that haven't been used in 100s of years. A bit strange, but also a little funny.

That's actually really cool. I've always liked when people have gone back to get names for their kids, especially if they go back to relatives. Mind you I wouldn't use all the names. LOL Like, sorry mom, but I won't name my kids after my mother or my mother-in-law. But each of my kids has a unique name that means something special to us while, for the most part, at the same time carrying on a family name.

I went to school with a girl named Shekinah. A girl I worked with for a while has a son named Memphis. Those are the most uncommon names I can think of right now. Some of the less common names are really cute, though. We named our little one Elliott because it wasn't a very common name. Then Elliott was one of the finalists on American Idol the same season my son was born, and the name surged in popularity, at least here. I looked at the baby names at the local hospital every week from my 15th on, and never came across my son's name. The week after he was born, there were TWO other Elliott's born! And then there have been several since, too.

See that's a lot like my oldest son. When we named him Liam, there were hardly any other Liam's (except for Liam Neason, the actor, LOL) around. Now, we run into other Liam's all the time. Still haven't found another Ascher but have found an Asher and Acher. LOL I don't think we'll have that problem with Nafeeza.

The trend here in Norway is to use old traditional names right now. old names that was used a lot more than 100 years ago are coming back. names like Johanne, Jenny, Ida, Maren, Hedda, Nora. French names like Chantelle or Jasmine is also quite popular.
