Do you give your kids the things they WANT or the things they NEED?

Have you ever asked your KID what he/she wants, then you decided as a parent/aunt/uncle/etc that he/she needs something else? Do you think what you did is right? When you were a kid did you experience this too? Me i did, remembering the launching of "Play Doh - soft clay where in you can make different shapes". I was only below 10 as i recall when my cousin who is more than 10 years older asked me what i want for my bday and i said "Play Doh" and he smiled. Knowing that he asked me, i was excited. ON my bday i rushed to open his gift expecting what i asked for... but to my surprise it was 3 novels. It made me frown but still i appreciated it. Do Share your story?
